How I Developed My Interest in Studying Psychology

Living in between my motherland, India and my current residence in Hong Kong where I have been brought up. This gave me a chance to compare these two societies. That is how I developed my interest in studying my major, psychology. I come from a society where girls are supposed to be caring and learn how to cook. However, my mother broke down the expectations the stereotypes for Indian women and is not only a housewife but also a businesswoman. She grew financially independent, which inspires me to follow her dream.

Therefore, I want to step into her shoes by following my dream and become a psychologist, an independent person where I can be able to change people’s mindsets of gender stereotypes. I want to be able to learn how society and children’s minds, in particular, works. The United Kingdom is where I want to pursue a degree in psychology because I want to explore their culture and lifestyle.

On top of that, I want to open up my choices to a diverse style of learning. Therefore, I believe UK can assist me with this.

Many things inspire me like how I can understand the society's minds. I am prepared to major in Psychology because in high school, I have taken Pre - AP (Advanced Placement) Biology, AP Statistics and AP Psychology with the aim of studying Psychology in my mind. Studying AP Psychology gave me an understanding of different people and their unique contributions toward Psychology. Also, I have learned different topics like psychology and its history and cognition.

One of the projects was to use 45 terms of psychology and connect to what I am passionate about. So, I connected to study religion and the terms I used was effortful processing, proactive interference and many more. Overall, this course taught me how there are different ways that the people gave their contributions. I want to be able to give a positive impact on the society. Studying Statistics has connected to Psychology because these subjects have experiments in which I need a hypothesis, control variable, independent and dependent variable. Also, Biology is about studying human minds and body which connects to Psychology as biology is towards scientific while Psychology is towards to observational study.

The other field that I am interested in is how children’s minds are working due to all the stereotypes. Having “Work Study” in my high school that I chose, gave me the privilege to be able to work with children and teachers and an understanding of the children’s thoughts, beliefs, and values as I helped them with their ideas of important people, this shows who the students value in their life, it not necessary that it should be family. Moreover, Jean Piaget’s stages of cognitive development connect with the children as I was working with grade three students who would be in the concrete operational stage as this occurs from 7 - 11 years old. This is the stage where children understand how to reason the arithmetic as I have observed during Work Study that the kids gave thoughts that why the appropriate response that they chose was correct. These courses are strong where I would be able to build my career. According to Stanford research, they want the relationship to be stronger between different generations and volunteer is the best way to do this. Therefore, I chose Work Study. I was the manager of U20 Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball Team in my high school. This connects to my major as helping others was always my passion and as psychologists, helping others is one of the key points as well as getting to know people. According to the psychologists, the way we think affects how we perform and the function in our body which was established by the area of psychosomatic medicine. Last year, I joined Jordan Leadership Club (JLC), a community service club, to help children with their homework and this gave me a better understanding on in the way of teaching children. Not only that, last summer, I received a golden opportunity of teaching children on the subject of “English.”. It taught me how to engage and interact with children as she was in the concrete operational stage from Piaget’s stages of development. There were many challenges like she was not understanding the way I teach so I taught her in a different way that she can understand. It’s all about teaching the way that my audience understands and I am still continuing to give her education even though I have my own school work.

In conclusion, I consider myself to be motivated by challenges as it would be a new experience for me. Therefore, I feel being able to study Psychology at your university will give me an opportunity to know how society works and how their brain works.
