How Big Data Can Improve Manufacturers?

Background Problem

Today we see many new technologies emerging with extraordinary sophistication created to facilitate human activity. The introduction of Industrial Revolution 4.0 reinforces the fact that the use of technology in this era is indispensable in every aspect of life. Industrial Revolution 4.0 or shortened to IR4.0 was introduced in 2011 by the German government to carry out a high-tech strategy project.

The transparency of information provided by Industry 4.0 technology provides operators with the amount of useful information needed to make the right decisions.

Inter-connectivity enables operators to gather large amounts of data and information from all points in the manufacturing process, thereby helping to function and identify key areas that can benefit from innovation and improvement.

Developing countries rely heavily on trade to increase the value chain to become a high quality manufacturing base through technology to be globally competitive. Therefore, IR 4.0 encourages manufacturing companies to apply automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies that create a smart factory where each machine will be connected to an internet system that can visualize the entire production chain in operations.

While implementing Industry 4.0 technology is a challenge, its benefits are beyond dispute.

Big data is difficult to process using ancient processing applications. This is because big data is a large and complex collection of data that comes from different sources such as sensors, sales transactions and content posted on social media websites. By 2020, the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the number will reach until 40 Zettabytes (ZB), which is the world will release 50 times as much information at a time. Its enormous increase in the amount of data generated that needs to be stored and analyzed quickly has been witnessed in recent years. Organizations use big data to analyze and seek insights to build optimal information systems. Big data can defined by volume, velocity, variety, value and veracity.

  • Volume: The amount of data been generated from different sources such as sensor-enable equipment capturing data
  • Velocity: The rate at which data is generated and received such as e-commerce applications combine personal preferences and mobile GPS location
  • Variety: The various types of structured, semi- structured and unstructured types of data. Unstructured data consist of files such as video and audio.
  • Value: The intrinsic value that the data may possess and discovered. There is wide variety of techniques to derive value from data.
  • Veracity: The abnormality in data. Veracity in data analysis is one of the biggest challenges. There are various tools and techniques in the market for big data analytics.

Data has long been a key source of manufacturing, reducing waste, improving driving efficiency, and additional profitability. Now, data is no longer used to report past activity but it helps manufacturers predict future events, predict risks, understand the value chain, and enhance the customer experience they deliver. All data is augmented, with new multidimensional capabilities and broader horizons. It's like a compass, paving the way for growth in manufacturing.

DISCUSSION

CONTENT

Big data is fast becoming an important element fourth-generation Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) technology. This era the fourth-generation ERP is transforming the manufacturing facility into a highly automated, efficient power house. Big data's ability to engage with people, data, and the process helps create a new era for manufacture. This new era "Future Factory" or "Related Company," there are two elements that drive transformation mindset and innovative data.

Manufacturers now have access to more resources for capturing and tracking data from before. Data comes from traditional sources, such as classic customer surveys, and more innovative applications. For example, smart sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to capture machine readings. Big data presents many promising and differentiating opportunities and challenges for industrial manufacturers, including heavy equipment manufacturers, electronics companies, auto manufacturers, oil and gas companies, and organizations that produces consumer goods and capital.

Managers across the organization can access real-time data for every aspect of the product, from warranty claims to cycle time and inventory allegations. In fact, the amount of data available is so large that it can quickly become obsolete and cause data loss. Like most commercial enterprises, industrial manufacturers have business and operations data on inventories, products, finances, human resources, partners and distributors. Industrial manufacturers are ready to use big data technologies to leverage these and many other data sources to optimize manufacturing and field operations. But in some cases, address key business needs by integrating data from and into their own products.

Today, predictive analysis has become a very valuable science and tool for manufacturers. It transforms data collected from various sources into a blueprint for future action. Therefore, big data is known as the gateway to the future. Modern business intelligence solutions now have the ability to visualize trends with high levels of accuracy. Anticipating consumer trends, required inventory, and maintaining sufficient resources to fulfill customer orders are operational priorities.

Data can help manufacturers identify opportunities to up-sell, cross-sell, and re-sell their current customers. Manufacturers can forecast customer needs and performance gaps in their current product. Based on customer data, it helps manufacturers reinforce their message and showcase the value of up-sell and cross-sell. Data is the same language between manufacturers and customer because it helps manufacturers understand and serve their customers. Indirectly it can builds a stronger relationship between each other.

CONCLUSION

Conclude

To compete in today's data-driven economy, that is clear that industrial manufacturers are advised to use it asset information for a comprehensive understanding customer, competitors, employee, market, product, distribution channel, and suppliers. Industrial manufacturers can realize value effectively manage and analysis of velocity, volume, and variety new and existing data, at once put the right skills and tools in its place. To remain competitive, manufacturers must receive big data. Manufacturers that make the most of the customer data, products, and equipment they take to improve their ability to innovate, serve their customers, and bring more profitable products and services to market faster

Suggestion

Big data creates an opportunity for operation manager to build a better future with proper, relevant and accurate data processing.

Emerge of the digital economy has pushed companies especially for the biggest company applied big data to perform operation activities

For the manufacturing industry be aware of technological developments to stay competitive in the global market
