Growing up in an environment where girls were not allowed to go to school after the age of twelve was difficult and challenging. A place where women had less rights than men. I was growing up in a rural society. Where I had close contact with nature, a small community size. Where agriculture was the primary occupation, and education is not at all necessary to succeed and survive. I was only three years old back then. I did not know that the best was yet to come.
My family was different.
My dad had dissimilar thoughts, he was different from all those who lived there. My dad always believed in Frederick Douglass’s quote “Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.” Education meant a bright future to my dad. It meant a one time opportunity for a person to become better.
He wished that he could have the chance to become someone he wants, but knew he could not. All that he could do is change our lives for the better, and he did. For that reason my family decided to move into a better place, my family moved into an urban society.
Wide range of occupational choices, Very large community size. Services industry and technology assistance. A society that is typical of modern industrial civilization. A place that provides greater job and educational opportunities.
A place where women were treated equal as men. My family moved into an urban society where high educational level is necessary to succeed. My dad was finally satisfied with what we were to become. He was thankful that we had a chance to be who we want to, without thinking that something might stop us. In return my siblings and I are working really hard to take advantage of the chance we were given to be successful and to make our father proud.
I am very grateful that I have lived in both societies. Both places have made me become a stronger and wiser person. The rural society made my family become different, the rural society made my family believe in something important and necessary for everyone in order to succeed. While growing up in an urban society made me become a brave and an independent woman. A woman who believes in educational success more than anything else in the world. A woman who knows that the key to a promising life is the educational opportunity she has. A woman who finally realized the real meaning of Nelson Mandela’s quote: “ education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.” And worked towards making the world a better place for everyone else to live in. Also believing that education is what determines who you are and who you can become. In 2012 my family moved to the United States of America. Here I have greater educational opportunity, in which I can become who I am and fulfill my father’s dream.
