Genocide is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a specific group of people based on their ethnicity, religion, or nationality. It is a heinous crime against humanity, characterized by violence, terror, and brutality, causing immense suffering and loss of life. The term was first coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944, following the Holocaust in which an estimated 6 million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis. Some other examples of genocide include the Rwandan genocide, Armenian genocide, and Bosnian genocide, all of which resulted in mass murders and atrocities committed against innocent civilians. It is important to remember such events and to work towards ensuring such atrocities never happen again in the future.
