The Armenian Genocide was the systematic extermination and expulsion of the Armenian population by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Beginning in 1915, hundreds of thousands of Armenians were deported or killed as part of a campaign to eliminate the Armenian presence in the Ottoman Empire. The genocide resulted in an estimated 1.5 million deaths, and sparked international recognition and condemnation of the atrocities committed against the Armenian people. Although the Turkish government denies that the events constitute genocide, the majority of scholars and the international community recognize it as such. The Armenian Genocide remains a contentious issue and a source of ongoing political and diplomatic tension between Turkey and Armenia.
