In its continuous evolution, it has gone from being just a work tool to a competitive and strategic element, also generating new business models based on its development.

In the 1980s, the introduction of microcomputers in the workplace marked the beginning of a new era, which had a profound effect on organizations. The rapid development of the processing power of the microcomputer (for example the Intel Pentium microprocessor), the application software packages (for example Microsoft Office) and the telecommunications networks have given rise to the phenomenon of computer science for the end user. End users can now use their IT resources to meet their business needs instead of waiting for indirect support from a centralized department of business information services. Furthermore, there has been progress in the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to corporate information systems. With less need for human intervention, knowledge workers could be released to handle more complex tasks.
