Enroll in a Higher Institution Everyone’s Choice

For many years now, students were pressured into going to college to get a higher education. Little do these students know that college is not for everyone. In today’s society, students have a choice if they would like to continue their education through college, technical schools, and apprenticeships. However, it is important to look at all the factors that may hinder you from achieving a higher education. These factors could be anywhere from tuition price to self-motivation. Achieving a higher education through college will not be easy.

College comes with a hefty price thru tuition. Tuitions rates for colleges are on the rise.

This is why the student’s family needs to check their financial status before they decide whether or not they can afford it. If the student desires to go to college but cannot afford the whole tuition, they can look into student loans. Commonly the typical college student depends on loans. “Federal student loans now total close to $1 trillion, larger than credit card, debit or auto loans and second only to mortgage debt on household balance sheets” (Owen).

With this being said it is important to make sure that students don’t bury themselves in loans. Next, Students needs to look at the field of study or career they would like to pursue. Deciding on a major will help the student get the most out of their degree and it will affect job searching. The final step is to be prepared. “College requires individual attributes, such as behaviors, motivation, academic preparation, demographic factors, and family characteristics” (Millea).

Technical schools are another option for students. These types of schools have many positive and negative advantages. This type of schooling provides training for a specific job at a lower cost than a four-year college. Training will be anywhere from one week up to two years, this will allow the student to get into their field of study faster. The student will also be taught by a teacher who has personal experience in the field. Students benefit from the teacher knowing the field because the teachers can provide helpful hints and tricks for obtaining the job. Looking at the student’s personal skills, this type of schooling will utilize the student’s knowledge to solve practical problems.

Students will gain positive characteristics, “During vocational training, you'll get lifelong skills, such as good work habits, self-confidence, teamwork, and practical problem solving” (Dueber). On the downfall, the students may train for a field that does not have any available positions. A helpful resource to avoid this is the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This handbook will help the students gather information about the work conditions, training, education, earnings and job outlook for any field of study. Students may also find that some technical schools do not have a state license, accreditation, not up to date courses, or they are not taught by teachers with the latest skills in that field. With this being said it is the student’s job to compare technical schools and gather all the information for their field of study. Apprenticeships are another way the student can continue their education. For those who do not know an

'Apprenticeship is a relationship between an employer and an employee during which the worker, or apprentice, learns a trade. The apprenticeship covers all aspects of the trade and includes both on-the-job training and related instruction in the classroom. Apprenticeships usually last about 4 years but range from 1 to 6 years. During this time, apprentices work under experienced workers known as journey workers—the status they will attain after successfully completing their apprenticeships' (Dueber).

This type of continuing education is commonly used for carpenters, welder, ironworker, electrician, stone mason, tile setter, and etc. Through an apprenticeship, the student becomes a part of a company. As the student learns the trade on the spot, he or she would get paid half of what the experience workers would get. Continuing through the apprenticeship, the apprentice would get an increased pay after completing portions of the training. With an apprenticeship, there are some typical requirements such as good attendance, attitude, work ethic, drug-free, reliable transportation, access to a phone, math skills, communication skills, and physical endurance. Students will also come across positive and negative advantages. Many students who go into the apprenticeships like that they won’t be behind a desk all day. Instead, they go from job to job, meeting new people and going new places. Students who take up an apprenticeship also like the fact they get paid as soon as they start and as they advance to journeyperson, the salary almost doubles. Plus, their wages are based on their level of training and years of experience. As a disadvantage, apprentices can get unemployed due to the weather or not enough work for the whole team.

Apprenticeships also limit the knowledge the student can learn. For example, if the student goes into the carpentry union, he will only learn the skills of that one trade. Students that do not want to continue their education will come across hardships in life. These students will miss creating a foundation for career success. College, technical schools and apprenticeships provide the students with knowledge relating to their field of study to equip them with all the necessary skills that are needed. These students who have a higher education are better prepared, have better performance, faster advancement, and higher pay than those who are not equipped well enough for the job. Students who do not get a higher education will also miss out on networking. Getting a higher education provides everyone with an opportunity to connect with classmates, teacher, and mentors. Students benefit from networking when they start seeking out a job in the future. Students that do not get a higher education won’t land an entry-level job. Those who get these jobs are risk takers that have a good combination of skills and formal education. Getting a higher education can improve your potential earnings.

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those who have an associate’s degree earn approximately $8,000 more per year than high school graduates, and those who have a bachelor’s degree earn about $24,000 more per year. This can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime” (Is College Right for Me?).
