Something that someone would never think would happen to them all changes in matter of seconds. May 18, 2018 in Santa Fe, Texas, 10 students killed in a deadly school shooting. School shootings have become a reality in the United States for many people, and very little is being done about it. Every day parents are sending their children to school with the worry if they will see them come home at the end of the day, and students may feel unsafe in their school environment because of what has happened across the nation.
School should be on the bottom of a parents list of unsafe environments for their own children. School shootings are events that could easily be minimalized by the increase of security in schools, a higher emphasis on students meeting with counselors, and the expunging of social media for adolescents.
An increase of security in schools is the most effective way of preventing a mass shooting. In many schools, students, and even pedestrians in the area are able to walk through the front door at the start of the bell without any sort of inspection.
Students are able to bring anything they wish into the school without faculty or staff knowing of it. Jack Martin, a retired Chief of School Police states that the reason schools fail in security is because they state all the time that “it can't happen here,” “we can’t afford it,” or “we don't have time to do all that”. These three statements are the only reasons any school wouldn't be able to increase the amount of security.
Solutions to not having a heavy influence on security are understandably expensive, but is worth the cost of any student’s life. Having a metal detector at each door of the school with a security guard present is such an easy solution, and could have saved the lives of many people. Having a heavy influence of the students relationships with their counselors is very important. “I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward”. If every person lived by this quote, the success rate in this country would increase greatly. In schools most importantly, students don’t always take mistakes as a way to grow. A lot of the times, that is the reason for stress and depression in any student. The presence of counselors is a great way to reduce stress, depression, or any problem a student may be going through.
Many schools only have only up to three counselors in total to match a school of eight hundred to a thousand students. The presence of more counselors and more meeting with the counselors will give students an opportunity to relieve their anxiety, and offer them a chance to say something they are afraid to speak about to their parents or guardians. The limitation or eradication of social media in adolescents is a way to stop thoughts of doing such horrible things from going through a student’s head. Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated that “to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”.
If every student, or person lived up to their own potential, and not something shaped by friends or social media, students could be much more satisfied with their lives. But this is not the case for a majority of today’s society. With music videos of song artists smoking, holding weapons, and inappropriate sexual conduct, and people tweeting or posting about the acts of stupidity they accomplished, it is nearly impossible for any person to not be stripped of their innocence. The average person across the United States, according to The Washington Post, spends up to six or more hours on a smart device. In a world where technology is a basis of an everyday life, that is understandable, but only to a degree. There wouldn’t be thoughts such as bringing a weapon to school unless it is introduced from somewhere else. School shootings can be brought to an end with the presence of higher security, a heavier influence on technology, and limitations on social media. Deadly events such as school shootings shouldn’t be an event that any person should have to worry about. But with what the past and current generations have brought forth, it is a reality. There are many solutions to this problem, but it all starts at home. A child reflects the atmosphere his parents or guardians have put upon him whether it is watching PG-13 or rated R movies, or simply the lack of respect they received from their parents.
