Good morning/evening family, friends, staff, Ms. Kayrooz and my fellow graduates who have helped me get to where I am today. My name is Fiona Do, a year 12 student about to graduate from the Queensland Academy of Science Mathematics and Technology. It is an honour to speak to you today on such a momentous occasion. My fellow graduates, we've made it. We have climbed a difficult, tough and memorable mountain called high school. If someone told me that one day, I’d make it into one of the highest achieving high schools and be school captain, I'd think that they were delusional, but here I am today! High school has been a fascinating experience on behalf of me.
It undoubtedly had its highs and lows and plenty of confusing experiences in between but it's made me into the person I am today.
I remember walking through the gates on the first day, feeling a wave of excitement and nervousness. The whole idea of being in high school was exciting but the work that lay ahead of me wasn't.
The first week was focused on transitioning into QASMT (yay no classes and a few weeks after that, we were on the bus to camp, but I wasn't very excited because of what the year 10s told us. 'The cabins were disgusting, it was so wet and muddy, the food is terrible, there're bugs everywhere, and I only lived for the morning teas'. It turned out the year 10s were only PARTIALLY right about camp because when they went it was heavily raining but when we went it was only lightly raining.
The activities were great fun, and everyone made at least another friend.
In the second term I signed up for robotics which is one of the CCAs. It stands for co-curricular activities. Up until this day, I'm still doing CCA because it's a great opportunity to make new friends and most importantly because it's fun. The following year, I received an academic award. I was jumping for joy! No, just kidding I wasn't jumping but I was extremely overwhelmed with happiness. Before I knew it, another year flew by. Year 9 was the last year of the Middle Years Program (MYP), which made me sad knowing that I'll have to start doing the International Baccalaureate Program (IB Program). Procrastinating since primary school was something that really took a toll on me once I became a senior. I was always staying up late, stressing over the. In grade 12 I was offered a spot at QUT, the University of Sydney and UQ.
That shy, untalkative and quiet person that walked through those gates on the first day of school in 2020 is no longer here. I'm much better than that now, thanks to all the opportunities QA has given me. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not solely university, but conjointly life. My journey at QASMT has taught me several things in those 6 years both academically and emotionally. Its disclosed and exposed my true colours, each good and bad. As a result, has designed several aspects of my character. My experiences at QASMT has formed me into the individual that I am today. I'll miss my time here dearly and I hope you, the upcoming years 7s will go through the same (or maybe even better) exhilarating experience.
