Throughout this semester, my immersion in the world of education has been both enlightening and transformative. As an aspiring elementary teacher, my dream has always been to foster learning and development in young minds. The invaluable field experience I gained allowed me to observe various classrooms, particularly at the elementary level, and envision my own future classroom and teaching methods. However, this experience also opened unexpected doors, leading me to consider teaching special education, a path I hadn't previously contemplated.
My primary task involved spending five hours each in elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms.
While I diligently observed teachers across all levels, it became apparent that my interest gravitated more towards elementary education. Initially focused on teaching grades kindergarten through fifth, I discovered an unexpected openness to teaching at middle grade levels. Observing student-centered classrooms revealed the effectiveness of group work, especially in empowering quieter students to actively participate and engage in class activities.
An exemplary instance occurred in a fourth-grade class where group work and station rotation fueled enthusiasm for the subject matter.
Witnessing the positive impact of collaborative learning, I aspire to incorporate similar methods in my future classroom. On the other hand, teacher-based classrooms, though informative, didn't resonate with me as much. The engagement levels of students seemed lower, creating a less dynamic learning environment. The warmth and approachability of the teachers I observed were universal, fostering a comfortable atmosphere that positively influenced student participation.
The interactions I witnessed between teachers and students underscored the significance of creating a comfortable classroom environment.
In a special education class, unique approaches, such as allowing students to sit on the floor during tests to reduce anxiety, highlighted the impact of teacher behavior on student conduct. This realization challenged my preconceived notions, particularly regarding middle school students, as the observed teachers effectively managed their classrooms with well-disciplined students.
Behaviorism, a topic explored in our textbooks, came to life as I observed various discipline philosophies in action. From reward systems to the gradual establishment of strictness, these diverse approaches provided valuable insights into effective behavior management. The teachers generously shared lesson plans, offering me a glimpse into the curriculum development process. This exposure broadened my perspective on content areas, grade levels, and the possibility of teaching special education, demonstrating the adaptability and versatility required in the teaching profession.
One of the most eye-opening experiences was the observation of an English as a Second Language (ESL) class at the tenth-grade level. Initially hesitant about teaching such a class, my perspective shifted as I witnessed the teacher-student interactions. Although the student-centered approach was evident, language barriers posed challenges in relating vocabulary to some students. This experience sparked reflections on potential technological and resource-based solutions, igniting an interest in further exploration of ESL teaching methods.
Every moment spent in the field this semester has solidified my commitment to a fulfilling career in education. The diverse classrooms I observed have broadened my horizons, and I now feel more confident in my ability to teach across different content areas, grade levels, and even in special education. As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the patient, innovative, determined, and compassionate educators who inspired me during this transformative period.
This semester's field experience has been a profound journey of self-discovery and professional growth. I have reaffirmed my passion for education, expanded my understanding of effective teaching methods, and embraced the idea of versatility in my future career. Inspired by the educators I had the privilege to observe, I am more determined than ever to become an educator who fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment. The insights gained from this experience will undoubtedly shape my teaching philosophy and approach as I embark on the fulfilling path of shaping young minds and contributing to the future of education.
