Edgar Allen Poe Stories

Categories: Fiction

While reading the stories I was intrigued in the way that he was able to create an evil scenery. His two short stories were able to draw us and keep us interested by building up the suspense as we read along. The main characters within his stories were insane, possessed evil qualities and were haunted by guilt. My goal was to write a story based mostly on The Cask of Amontillado with a hint of qualities from The Fall of the House of Usher.

Initially, In The Cask of Amontillado the main character is driven by revenge. Very much like the story of Amontillado my main character seems to be overreacting but we can understand their overreaction as the story goes along. There is obviously something wrong with the main characters. They do not react to the situations like any sane rational person would.

Marcela is deeply in love with Elijah and she fears his long lost friend will take him away from her.

She believes her beauty is a disguise for who she really is. Elijah is not able to see this because her beauty blinds him but Marcela is able to see past that. In the very beginning she says “She is everywhere, haunting me not only in my present world but in my sleep as well.” She becomes paranoid and starts to loose sleep over this matter. She must do everything in her power to keep Mia from “devour[ing] the heart of [her] poor naive Elijah.” Her insanity plus the lack of sleep leads her to her actions.

My character feels like she is at risk of loosing someone she adores. Marcela is looking forward to how the night will end. We are able to see this when she says “Oh the pleasure is all mine darling, come sit.” I said with a smile on my face as I graciously poured the bottle of wine.” She seems to be enjoying this. She does not have a plan as to how she will kill Mia and that is the probably the most exciting thing for her. Not only is it suspenseful for the readers but it also suspenseful to her. It can happen at any given moment in any way.

At first everything is nice and they are enjoying dinner but things escalate as the story goes on very much like in Amontillado. It is not enough for the person who betrayed them to die but they must suffer first. We are able to see Mia’s fear portrayed through the eyes of Marcela. In her final words Mia is so desperately trying to say Marcela’s name, gasping for air as she tries to breath. She knows she will not be able to clean up the mess without leaving evidence so she burns the house down, starting with the body. She laughs as she watches the body burn, further showing us her psychotic behavior.

Additionally, I tied in The Fall of the House of Usher towards the end of the novel. Like in The Fall of the House of Usher the main characters are ridden with guilt of what they have done. The people they have buried come back to haunt them. In my story my main character is haunted by the screams she “heard” in the fire. She seemed to believe that they were the screams of the all the souls that Mia had taken. This caused her to have a mental breakdown. Once again she was acting like she had no free will and was “forced” to cut off her ears.

To conclude, I was able to get inspiration from The Cask of Amontillado for the majority of my story. Like in Amontillado I created a character who was out searching for revenge and takes matters into their own hands. In The Fall of the House of Usher Marcela’s actions come back to haunt her. Alcohol seems to play a big role in both stories, which is why I incorporated it in mine. Mia could have probably escaped if she had not had all that wine. Marcela also uses the wine as the incinerator for the fire.
