Depression is diagnosed in an individual who seems to have lost hope due to an event or a situation that leads to bitterness, sadness, and inactivity. Thus, victims of depression may detest previously interesting events due to perceived negative impact. Anxiety, on the other hand, is characterized by overexcitement or worry which may be caused by a positive or negative impact.
Depression and anxiety are considered the "common cold" of mental health due to the fact that several individuals at all ages are affected by these conditions. It also does not occur once in a lifetime but rather depending on circumstances and hardships of life. A person can be affected by another person close to him/her. The common cold, depression and anxiety, also share some symptoms like tiredness, nausea, inactiveness, and irritability/discomfort. More or less, they attack and affect an individual in a similar manner. It is almost impossible to prevent life's setbacks and their effects. However, the ways people react are different.
Some of the factors that cause anxiety and depression include environmental factors such as stress from marriage, divorce, finances, and an occurrence like natural disasters. These are events that occur frequently in the United States. Stress may occur on a day-to-day basis, but the cause of distress is an individual's inability to handle the stressful issue at hand. Once it gets out of control, depression or anxiety develops.
Some medical ailments may also lead to anxiety and depression. Some patients will fall victims to anxiety as a result of medications' side effects. Some long-term ailments like cancer and H.I.V/AIDS might lead to depression as individuals have to constantly put in mind that they are living with these sicknesses.
The American youth treasure the ability to fit into the society and be readily accepted. If an individual feels left out or discriminated upon, then the state of depression or anxiety creeps in as they try to work hard to implement one thing after another which might lead to their acceptance and recognition. Under circumstances when their effort does not pay off, the situation gets even worse.
Lifestyle is another factor that has made the people of the United States walk around depressed and anxious. It includes aspects such as eating habits. Issues of weight gain that lead to obesity have driven many individuals to this state. Majority of the foods are junk-related and fatty. Although most people try to keep a healthy diet, they still end up being overweight. Getting back the initial shape proves difficult, leading to depression and anxiety.
Factors that are related to the work place include those of environmental significance. Being stressed at work due to work load, inability to reach targets, or fear of retrenchment may lead to depression and anxiety. Another factor related to the workplace leading to depression or anxieties include discrimination from other employees due to ethnic background. Sexual harassment at the work place may also push employees into depression and confusion.
