The menace of violence associated with "cultism" in higher institutions reached a tragic zenith with the brutal massacre of five students at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in the early hours of July 10.
The roots of cult violence can be traced back to the early 1980s, with the first recorded cult-related violent death occurring in 1984. It is disheartening that over fifteen years elapsed since the inception of this violence and nine years since the Pyrates Confraternity raised a national alarm before the nation collectively decided to confront this issue.
Nevertheless, acknowledging the problem and taking decisive action, even belatedly, is a crucial step in the right direction.
This symposium stands as a commendable initiative, and it is hoped that tangible steps will be devised to comprehensively address this challenge. There is an undeniable urgency, and the hope is that the tragedy at OAU becomes the catalyst for a collective resolve.
