Covid-19: Impact on Environment

COVID-19 is a deadliest virus in history that has changed our way of seeing this world. It has proven many of our methodology wrong. It has also exposed the defects in our healthcare system. Since there is no preventive, each and everyone has to lockdown themself in case like animals. They have to adjust to a lifestyle that they never thought of. Even though this unprecedented situation is negatively impacting our daily life and economy, it's making some positive impacts on the environment.

COVID-19 is having a significant impact on air pollution, water pollution at least for a short term and this might also be a lifelong lesson for us moving forward.

Covid-19 has a significant impact on air pollution. In Rome, air pollution has decreased by 45% compared to last year (Davis). Smoke released from factories is one of the prime causes of air pollution.

Large numbers of vehicles and airplanes are also big contributors to the high level of air pollution. 23% of global carbon emissions are from transportation (Henriques). Due to COVID-19, the world has come to a halt, factories and offices are closed, people aren’t travelling. Factories and vehicles are not burning fuels and polluting the air with its black smoke and spilled fuels. Even after a large number of Carbon Dioxide released from bushfires in Australia, there is a 5% drop in global carbon emissions, lowest in a decade (Milman). Air quality would improve substantially if this continues for a few more months.

Water pollution has decreased a lot due to Covid-19.

Water pollution is mainly caused by factory waste and oil spill by boaters. The spilled oil, fats, paints, and dangerous chemicals are very harmful for the plants and sea creatures in the water. Discarding untreated sewage into bodies of water is also harmful for sea creatures. Nowadays, it has become a common habit for a large number of people to throw trash on the street and leave trash on the beach, especially the plastic items. According to a CNN study, 8 million tons of trash goes into the ocean every year and the numbers are going up each year (Christensen). Later, all of this trash is found stuck in birds, turtles and whales or in their stomachs. Plastic is obviously a cheap product to make, but it comes at a high price for an environment. Due to this pandemic, all the factories and beaches are closed and water is getting cleaner. China is the biggest contributor to the air and water pollution. Due to factories and coal plants closure for Covid-19, coal use fell by 40% and emissions fell by 25% (Martha). The water and air qualities have considerably changed due to Covid-19.

The relationships between human and nature are becoming bitter and bitter. Humans have declared an unofficial war against nature. Day by day, humans are occupying all the space of nature. They are cutting down trees, killing animals, filling up the sea with plastics. As wild animals look for a place in human nature after losing their place in the wild, they come in contact with humans. Humans also come in contact with unfamiliar diseases. Study shows deforestation has been linked to many lethal diseases, for instance, malaria and dengue came from mosquitoes, Ebola and AIDS from chimpanzees, Lyme from ticks, SARS is also believed to have come from an unknown animal (Quinney). The earth needs to be balanced in between nature and humans. Therefore, humans need to care about nature. Children and teenagers need to be educated and demonstrate the long term effect of environmental pollution. Most people think polluted air only makes us cough or sneeze, but it makes us sick and eventually kills us. Air pollution is actually linked to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, stroke, and certain cancers. COVID-19 inflection rate is higher in the polluted area than in the normal area (Kachroo). We might live a few days without food, without water a day or so, but without fresh air not even a few minutes. They need to stop throwing their garbage all over the place, recycle the plastic items or use paper instead. Humans need to be aware of environmental pollution otherwise we will destroy our own environment with our own hands. Everyone needs to play their part to restore forests and the ocean.

Obviously Covid-19 pandemic is having an unimaginable impact on our daily life, work and economy, but when it comes to the environment, it's having positive impacts at least for a short term. Time after time has proven that humans are keeping violating the rule of nature. Therefore, we are having a pandemic like COVID-19 in every few years, but we are not learning from our mistakes. Hopefully, we learn something from this Covid-19 and better manage the environment. Remember, a healthy planet means fewer diseases and the better we manage the environment, the better we manage our health.
