The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” The novel 'Tomorrow When the War Began' follows eight characters that are faced with a situation that is out of their comfort zone and are placed in war. This not only brings out their leadership skills but also their courage. Throughout the novel there are several aspects of courage that are demonstrated by different characters.

Fi, Ellie and Kevin are some characters that demonstrate different types of courage throughout the novel.

Fi demonstrates different aspects of courage throughout the novel. In the beginning Fi is portrayed as the weak link of the eight and without courage; but throughout the novel we find out how courageous she is in different aspects and events. An event during that book that demonstrates courage in Fi is when they planned to blow up the bridge.

She develops courage that no one new about, she was always thought as one that didn't have courage. Although, the courage that Fi had was courage to be strong and never give up in everything that had happened even though she got scared. “I guess true courage is when you're really scared but you still do it" page 256. She proves everyone wrong when she helps lead the tanker to the bridge for the plan. This shows that courage can come from anyone, no matter who you are.

As one of the main characters of the book, we learn a lot about Ellie.

We learn about her leadership skills but most importantly the courage that she develops. She learns what true courage is and demonstrated it in different aspects of the book. When she is put in difficult situations, she is faced with the choice; whether to face the situation or to leave. An event that demonstrates her courage both physically and emotionally would be the mower incident at the showgrounds. Here Ellie was put in a situation that is out of the ordinary, she was forced to do something that she wouldn't normally do. In this quote Ellie says “To come out of the darkness now would be to show courage of a type that I'd never had to show before, never even known about" page 46. The courage that she demonstrates shows that having courage may bring you in situations that you would never do.

All the characters throughout the book demonstrated different aspects of courage, but Kevin showed courage a different way to the other members of the group. Although Kevin isn't mentioned as much as the other members, his courage towards his fellow members is commendable especially towards the end of the novel. As Corries boyfriend, Kevin was very close to her. While the group is running towards Kevin's uncles' house Corrie gets shot. Courage is demonstrated here by him being brave and carrying Corrie to the hospital, when knowing that he is entering enemy grounds and would be likely shot and killed. "No. I don't give stuff what's rational and what's logical. Corries my mate and I'm not going to dump her and run" page 281. This quote shows that he is willing to risk his own life for his friends. Although there aren't many examples of courage shown by Kevin throughout the book, by him risking his life for others shows courage.

All members of the group displayed different aspects of courage but courage is shown by Fi, Ellie and Kevin through perseverance, never giving up or risking your life for others. The courage displayed by Fi, shows that she persevered through the tough times and never gave up even when people thought that she ci it. The courage in Ellie showed that, you may be put in situations that are out of your comfort area but never give up. Kevin displayed that friendship is important and to look out for your friends. Courage can be displayed in any form and shape, it doesn't matter who you are.
