College Experiences: Exciting but Very Difficult

Community colleges not only offer a higher education but shows a very divergent range between students in terms of their age, ethnicity, and careers goals. In the article “The Myth of Inferiority”, Allen Culpepper, shares his point of view on community college students. Most of the students who enroll in community college are older students. Many of the students that attend might have kids or work full time jobs making it harder for them to be completely focused on school. Everyone deals with a life full of difficulties, adversities and negative experiences.

Therefore, having a hard life is no excuse for excessive absences and late paperwork.

Having a hard life should not be an excuse for missing excessive number of classes. Students that don’t attend class miss valuable class information. A part of being responsible and accountable for their actions as college students includes reaching out to the professor to get the assignment or notes that they missed. Some students quickly realize that taking on a lot of responsibility at once is not as easy as they might have hoped for.

Culpeper mentions in his article “I have found students who manage to complete a full load of classes successfully while working three jobs, rearing multiple children alone, caring for elderly relatives. (Culpepper B28). This statement purely means that students who take on a lot of responsibility can still make time for school and even succeed.

In addition, bringing in late paperwork and having missing assignments should not be overlooked.

Most college professor create a syllabus provided on the first day of class outlining all the assignment and due dates for the semester. In that case, why would any assignment be late? College teaches an important lesson about life that the world doesn’t stop for just one individual. Once the paper is due it’s time to move on to the next assignment. Professor only have a few weeks to cover all the material need for the course. Anyone wanting to succeed in college should make time to put in the effort and do the work.

Nevertheless, everyone has sick days or even car troubles making it impossible to make it to class. Every student has other responsibilities outside of the classroom and may struggle with maintaining a healthy balance between life and schoolwork. Staying in touch with the professor is good way to stay on the right track. Getting ahead on readings, papers, and other assignments is also a way to be focused and more organized. All community colleges have a quiet library to study in and even offer tutoring session to help.

College can be exciting but very difficult at the same time. Most college experiences include some level of stress and feelings of emotional imbalance. Remember that working towards a college degree is the goal, and not attending class and not doing assignments is a waste of good fortune.
