A Reflection of the Exciting Experience of Going Back to School

Categories: Back To School

Ever since I was young I always knew I wanted to go to college; things don't always go according to plan. I dropped out during my freshman year after failing some online classes. I took a very long four year break; during this time I worked at a job that I hated and had a baby boy. I then knew that I had to provide a better life for my son and myself; I made the decision to go back to school.

There were many reasons that helped me decide to go back as well as many reasons that kept me from going back. Now that I am here in school taking classes I have made my education and future career a priority, and set goals for both.

On September 10th 2011 at 8:33PM Jayzce Andrew Price came into the world weighing 7lbs 2oz. The best day of my life was also the most awakening. As I stared at him for hours in my hospital bed I couldn't stop thinking how I had to provide him the best possible life.

Three months of un-paid maternity leave flew by; it was time to go back to the job I despised. I knew I needed to get back into school; I kept thinking how am I going to do this? How am I going to go to school, work, pay bills and take care of my son? I have seen many of my friends and co-workers do it so I knew if they could do it I could as well.

I checked out my resources, being a single parent gave me a lot more opportunities for help with school, which also helped me, make the decision to come back.

I felt as if there were so many things holding me back from school, money being the largest issue. When I was in college previously, I did not have as many financial obligations as I do today. Family was there to help me out with tuition, I was living with my parents and I did not have a child of my own; all of which had changed. After months of research I took the plunge: I enrolled here at CPTC, weighed my financial options, and choose to follow coursework to get into the Practical Nursing Program. I was terrified to take out any loans and get deeper into debt; I had to keep reminding myself not to put a price on my education or my son and his future. My full time job position was one more thing keeping me from school. I know they were not willing to work around school schedule. I was lucky enough to find a part-time job that would work with my class schedule. I then took my placement tests, applied for student loans, and enrolled in three classes as a full time student. I was so relieved to finally be back on the right track.

Now that I am finally back in school, I have set education and career goals for my future. Currently, and for the next three quarters, I am taking per-requites for the Practical Nursing Program. To meet criteria to be accepted into this program I will also have to become a Certified Nurse's Assistant, which will be another quarter itself. While I wait to be accepted into the LPN program I want to look for work as a CNA at a local hospital or nursing home. I also plan on starting my per-requisites for the Registered Nurse program as well while waiting to get into the LPN program. My ultimate goal is to become a Labor and Delivery RN. I love babies; it was something I decided I would love to do every day after being in the hospital after having my son.

Deciding to go back to school has been a very exciting experience. I cannot wait to move forward and keep working towards my goals. I have explained what made me go back to school, what kept me from going back and what my future goals are now; both educational and career wise. I refuse to let anything come in my way on my pathway to success. All I need to do to keep me motivated it looks at my beautiful son every day and know that he deserves is all. I want to be able to provide him the things I did not have growing up.
