College can be exciting to students, but it can also be quite overwhelming and challenging, challenges college students face. Numerous students commence their university quest with dreams and optimism of securing a degree and enhancing their situation at work, at home, or in life overall. Often, once students start their college voyage they encounter a wide range of challenges and obstacles that can appear insuperable. For some learners it just slows them down, for others, it can hinder them from accomplishing academic dreams and aspirations.
Nevertheless the category of institution private or public, small or big, first-year or four-year, we frequently hear about and observe the same issue from the existing and prospective students about challenges they face in college. While I have gained a lot of positive experience in college, there are many issues I encounter, such as academic preparedness, time management, and homesickness.
Time management is one of the major challenges I have faced at college. College is educationally challenging.
College courses oblige much more effort than high school classes did. Unlike in high school where classes were quite flexible, colleges often compress two years of content material into one year, and at times, it seems difficult to stay on top of it all. Also, balancing work and school is another major challenge that makes my time management skills difficult. Working and still pursuing my study is significantly challenging. This is because I have to manage my study, part-time jobs, internships as well as extracurricular activities concurrently which is quite problematic.
As a result, these responsibilities are sometimes overwhelming and hinder my time management skills. I, therefore, find it difficult to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and seek assistance when it is required. Therefore, I would say that managing commitment is one of the primary challenges that I face at college today.
Another challenge that I face at the college is academic preparedness. Numerous learners face the apprehension that their earlier academic groundwork was not at the proportion it needed to be to perform exemplary. Probably, the underprepared learner may not have taken requisite college elementary courses. This implies that the underprepared scholars will likely need counteractive courses to attain or regain base-level educational competency. I am not an exception to this problem. This challenge can be tremendously stressful for learners and can frequently be the reason that leads to student attrition. Attending classes in college is considerably more challenging. For starters, you need to be far more self-reliant. Professors do not nag students about studying and completing assignments on time. As a result, sometimes I lack the necessary self-driven discipline hence, I sometimes quickly fall behind. This adjustment is quite tiring, and it is a major hurdle I face at college.
Another challenge I have faced at college is homesickness. Starting life at college generally triggers both excitement and apprehension for numerous reasons incorporating new moves, meeting new friends, and academic responsibilities. For some student, this anxiety is swiftly overcome as they acclimatize to a new setting, for some the transition takes longer and sometimes transpire as nostalgia where there is pre-occupation with home-focused contemplations. When I experience homesickness, I often feel an increase in dejected feelings, compulsive thoughts, and anxiety. This normally manifests by feeling mildly low and apprehensive several weeks before departing home in the expectation of the impending change. Homesickness can trigger less adaptability to a new environment and higher levels of psychological disturbances and absentmindedness which is unhealthy.
In essence, academic challenges are quite prevalent in college and hurt student performance. Also, college is acknowledged to generate emotional problems that symbolize impediments in a student’s life while affecting academic performance. All challenges college students face highlighted in this paper play a critical role in generating feelings of anxiety, depression, and even distraction that adversely affect academic performance. Missing family members and friends make it tough for the learner to fine-tune to this new social life of the college and puts some form of desperation for students at the start of their new life. Going forward, I will endeavor to find a solution to these challenges so that I can excel in my studies.
