Case Analysis: John Roughneen

Has Glenn made a good career move?

A: Based off Glenn's own words in the case study, he was open when it came to leaving his previous job and working full time as the systems developer for Streamline. Did he make a good career move? I believe he did. The reason why is because he wasn't feeling a sense of drive or fulfillment at his previous job, at least that is what I got from his quote on page 9 of the case study.

"I've always been a lot more haphazard about how I live...yeah, whatever, sounds great to me.

I'll certainly quit my job and start working on this." Also, since he had seen the interest in the business at the associations/conventions I believe this encourage them to stay on and see the product/business through.

Should John quit Pepsi and join Glenn full time?

A: In my opinion I don't believe John should quit his job at Pepsi.

The reason being is because I believe history will repeat itself, by that I mean throughout the time they were developing the software and establishing their product I could get a sense that John was kind of hesitant on the future of the business.

Looking at the first business he established in college, "college essentials" John was doing pretty good with that business from what he could tell at the beginning. With college essentials he also saw interest early on for the business in the market and he knew what he had to do to expand it which would have been to franchise it.

Now, he sold the business away because he didn't like "dealing with expenses and headaches relating to Worker's Compensation and other matters." I feel that John had his father's lesson in his head, "be successful at one thing.

"Just as he didn't see his catering business making enough money and didn't see a clear future, I believe history would have repeated itself if John had chosen to stay at streamline. Leaving a great position and future at Pepsi Co.

What factors did you contemplate as you considered questions 1 and 2?

A: When it comes to both questions, there is a lot of factors to consider throughout the case study. On one side you have Glenn, cougar up in a very different way from John.

The resources that he had as well as his father's position as a CFO and eventually stepping down to establish his own business I believe is what gave Glenn the courage to do the same with streamline. Glenn also didn't have a family at the time, unlike John.

This made making decisions on establishing streamline a lot easier especially when it came to him having savings from stratus stock to support himself with. John, I believe had the mind of an entrepreneur but when it came to the time to "jump-ship" from his corporate job to establishing his own business I believe he always played it safe and in my opinion smart.

John came from a first-generation family, he worked in many ways a lot harder than Glenn when it came to their education. John worked his way up through PepsiCo and knew the future he would have at that company. John also had a family to consider and provide for, how was he going to risk jeopardizing the financial comfort of his family for the possibility of streamline going big.
