Blue Bell Ice Cream Recall

There have been multiple cases of listeria in Blue Bell’s Ice cream. Ten times since January of 2010 there have been 10 Cases. Most recent of them to happen in 2015. In February of 2015 The Department of Health of South Carolina found three strains of Listeria Monocytegenes that later showed up in Kansas After 5 reported cases 3 of which lead to death. They found the bacteria in the single serve portions of Chocolate chip country cookie sandwich and Great divide bar ice cream products.

Products also recalled were the 3 oz portion ice cream cups (strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate) (Shinners, 2015), frozen yogurt products and Frozen snacks. There were 10 cases 1 in Arizona, 5 in Kansas, 1 in Oklahoma, and 3 in Texas (CDC, 2015).

Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection caused by eating food containing the bacterium Listeria Monocytegenes (Listeria). People at risk include Pregnant women and the newborns, Adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems. On March 13,2015 the CDC announced a link in in the Kansas cases (Marler, 2015).

All five of the people infected in Kansas were all patient of the same hospital in Wichita where the virus was contracted. All the infected individuals were adults. With all the test results coming back positive Blue Bell issued a Voluntary recall on March 13, 2018.

In Blue Bell’s defense this was a company based out of the heart of Texas that served us faithfully in the Southeast since 1907. Before this recall Blue bell was actively sold in 23 States. Blue bell was so big it was the number 3 Ice-cream maker in the nation (Gibson, 2015).

The recall forced them to downsize dramatically. The laid off 1,450 Employees and furloughed anther 1,400. In today’s market you can find them in 17 different states with more than 40 different flavors.

More Recently in 2017 the FDA said, “Blue Bell is not responsible for the listeria in the latest recall” (Thorton, 2017). They determined that the listeria itself came from cookie dough that originated in the Aspen hills plant. Meaning that they do not manufacture their own cookie dough for the ice-cream making them not responsible for the outbreak. In the End Blue Bell Let go of Employees, Profits and Products over a contamination that was not in house. This just goes to show exactly how much a company cares about their customers. A multi-million-dollar company gave up profit to do the right thing.

In the beginning of this it Every article that I read made it look like Blue Bell was solely Responsible for the contamination. A couple of years after the initial contamination process they were proven innocent, but that didn’t change the fact that their reputation was ruined. Since then I hope that Blue bell has taken the proper steps to ensure things like this do not happen again. Blue bell has been a house hold name that everyone has known for years. It would be a shame if it just disappeared because someone else messed up.
