The song I chose to find the meaning behind is a song that is very special to me. It is called "Death Dance" by the band Palaye Royale. I found that the message Palaye Royale was trying to get across was that depression and anxiety is a cycle. It can be caused by a variety of things, but for them, it was not fitting society’s picture perfect image and issues at home in their childhood.
I chose to find the meaning behind this song because of how special this song is to me and how much I can relate to the message of it.
Ever since I first listened to it, I had a small understanding about what the song was about. I come from a very similar background. This song just made it easy to cope with everything that had happened in the past and is still happening in the present. It helps me feel like I’m not alone with my feelings and that even though I’m stuck in this cycle I’m not alone in my feelings.
Throughout the song, there were many lyrics that fit the message, but the verse “We live in an age where sex and horrors are gods.
We live in an age where all our bodies are flawed.” This line is repeated six times. The line can be interpreted in a few different ways, but I feel it means that in today’s society most people would say that everyone only cares about sex and fitting this ‘perfect’ image of being thin, wearing make-up, and having designer clothing such as Gucci and Prada.
They’re also saying that horror is a god because we Millennials today are all scared of every decision we make. We fear to make our decisions because we are scared we will get frowned upon by everyone who is the definition of society’s image. Also, in the line “We live in an age where all our bodies are flawed” Palaye Royale is trying to say that our bodies are not perfect. We try so hard to be the ideal body, but in the end, everyone’s is different. Everyone is flawed. It shows how society has made them either depressed or anxious because they don’t fit the ‘perfect’ image. There is a second verse from the song that withholds the message was “I never thought I’d be so mean, never thought I’d be alone at nineteen”. This verse of the song can also be interpreted in multiple different ways, but in my opinion, it refers to abandonment. The abandonment that they went to from someone in their life left them paranoid to get close to anyone. They would have pushed everyone that tried to get close in fear that they would abandon them as someone had done in his younger years. This would have left him alone. He would have felt mean towards everyone he pushed away. This relates to the message of the song because it shows that the abandonment could have left him with that anxiety and it can always cycle whenever they try to get close to someone or they try to get close to them. The final line that I found was “I just want to be myself. I have tried to, but now I am someone else.” This verse of the song means that the society and everyone else around them had told them to be themselves and so they do or tried to be themselves rather. They were themselves, but society had decided they didn’t like who they were when they were themselves and so society tried to mold them into someone else. They tried to make them into the ‘perfect’ people. That could have led them to have the depressing feeling of not being good enough. It also would have left them with social anxiety of everyone looking at them for being different and not fitting in.
Recently I have found myself reading the works of Emerson Barrett. In his book 'The Avant-Garde Society Volume Two" he has talked about his depression. A few weeks ago he was discussing how he felt like he was falling apart. He mentions how he felt insufferable pain and infinite sadness. Remington Leith has discussed his feelings of depression along with Sebastian Danzig who has talked about his anxiety. The three brothers all have talked about their struggles with mental illness. These things have led me to the conclusion of where the song was inspired by.
