An Analysis of the Honor, a Keen Sense of Ethical Conduct

Categories: EthicsHonorPhilosophy

To me honor is being yourself, by that I mean not being afraid to be an individual and think for yourself as well as doing what you believe to be the right thing to do.. That is honorable in today's society where people are being brainwashed and becoming droids and all having the same opinion about everything. It takes a real individual with a good sense of self worth to stand up for themselves to think, act and dress how they want.

Honorable people throughout history have set the precedent for society. So in this day an age, where are these honorable people that are going to show us the way?

Honor to different people can mean completely different things, so it's almost impossible to come up with one solid definition of what honor is. To some people being a brave soldier and dying for your country is honorable. For others, it's being a missionary in a poor African country. While the deeds that are considered honorable maybe different, I think it all goes back to my point of being an individual and doing what you think is right.

Those missionaries don't go to Africa for anything. They go to bring the world of God. Those soldiers aren't out there dying for naught, they are trying to ensure America stays free. While those instances maybe different, they have one thing in common, and that is that in both instances the actions are done because of some moral conviction to do what is right.

These people are few and far between these days, and it's really a breath of fresh air to see people with some kind of morality these days.

In ancient times, honor was shown in many different ways. The Japanese even had "honorable deaths" which were if you lose in battle you are to have your head cut off, and they saw this as a way to honor those lost in combat, examples of this can be seen in the movie The Last Samurai. In modern society we no longer view ritualistic suicide as honorable but to the Japanese this was the highest of all honors you could have bestowed upon you. This just shows that throughout history honorable people and honorable deeds have been revered and given society and model to look up to.

In closing, while Honor to you and me or my neighbor might be completely different and unrelated things, they share the same basic ideas. To be honorable is to be the one that goes against the society norms it seems and does something for someone else, so selflessness it seems would be the answer. Even in ancient times this was present and between then and now the same basic idea still exists, so in order for society to progress we need more honorable people to come and be a shining example to the rest of us.
