If I weren't in your arms right now
I don't know what I would be doing
Probably sulking in my room,
telling myself this loneliness
doesn't bother me,
it isn't killing me.
And I would be right
to some degree.
The betrayals did more damage
than loneliness ever could.
They crippled me every time.
After a few heartbreaks
you think you have learnt
how to deal with the pain
but you never do.
The pain seems new every time.
The wounds deeper
and the scars last longer,
every time.
It feels like the end of life,
like you won't get up in the morning.
You will stay in bed, dead.
Lifeless. Without feelings.
But upon the sun rising,
you ultimately awaken.
You drag yourself around.
You walk. You cry.
You repent. You eat.
You cry again.
You sleep.
You get up.
You follow the cycle of life.
The pain, the joy,
the love, the sorrow
keeps coming back and going.
In circles.
And right now the circle has brought me
into your arms,
and I am grateful for everything.
Even the heartbreaks.
This poem revolves around a number of themes, but the main one is love.
The other themes that are evident include struggle and longing. This poem, Circles, just as the name suggests, portrays a lover who is having quite a tough journey in terms of her love life. Throughout the poem, the readers get to know what this lover experiences in her daily life. The theme of struggle comes in when the lover is forced to deal with the pain which seems to come up in a different form each time.
She has also dealt with a few heartbreaks and betrayals. With all these in mind, however, she still comes back as a result of the longing she has towards the lover. She therefore stays because of love.
I wrote this poem cause of the inspiration I received from someone. Someone who probably knows nothing about me and I know nothing about, and this was my neighbor. I live in a gated community where everyone minds their own business as a result of their tight schedules. This one couple in the neighborhood, however, caught my attention. This was mainly about how the man treated his wife, beatings, insults, and so on. I kept asking myself why she would choose to stay, then it once hit me that this man, according to the lady, was the perfect man for her. That in that battering man, was a sweet, loving and caring husband. She must be hoping that one day he will change. It is like she sees a flicker of light and gets her hopes high then he is back to hurting her and this goes on and on, thus the title CIRCLES.
My audience could be any modern lover. It is therefore relevant in the current society as many people are in such relationships hoping that their partners will soon change, which, in most cases, does not happen. The irony, however, is that they are still willing to stay even with all these issues, just as the one in the poem who says that she is thankful for everything, even the heartbreaks.
This poem also serves as a warning to the young people. In this present age, people are always rushing to involve themselves in relationships without knowing how their partners truly are. Such people come to realization when it is too late and therefore end up living in hurt as a result of the mess they put themselves into. Everyone should therefore be extra careful when it comes to the matters of the heart. Once someone breaks your heart, it can be fixed but it will never be the same, as the cracks will remain.
