In our modern world and society, the views on beauty is a stick-like figure of a model with the body of a goddess. Because of pictures like this and other figures of beauty, one is indoctrinated to believe that they must look like these images in order to look beautiful. And the fastest and simplest way to achieve this is by having plastic surgery. Throughout the year's men and women have been revealed to plastic surgeries in order to look like that specific image they have in mind.

In approximately in 1600 BC, Egyptians started practicing surgeries on the nose and jaw (Wallace A.B, 1965). Even at that time, people were concerned about their appearances and beauty standards, so they tried making changes on their bodies by surgical intervention. Today, with the accelerated development of technologies and medicine, plastic surgeons can achieve truly life-changing and transforming results. Physicians in ancient India, going back to 800 BC, started utilizing skin grafts for reconstructive work. In Europe however, advances were slowly coming. In eastern countries, medicine took more readily to plastic surgery. There are many skin grafts incidents recorded throughout the years. In ancient India, there was a famous “healer” known as Sushruta; he was arguably the first and the best of surgeons at the time. He wrote a book which is enough proof and evidence that plastic surgeries did in fact exist in the old ages. He used skin patches from other parts of the body to graft it on the face of the person to correct it. In 600 BC, the “Father of Surgeons”, Gaspare Tagliacozzi used flaps of the skin on the upper arm to perform grafting on the nose. In 1789, Pierre Desault of Greece called plastic surgeries as “plastikos” which means molding. When anesthesia and antiseptics were introduced in the 19th century, plastic surgeries became safer and easier. After the war in 1923, the first rhinoplasty was performed in the United States. Later in 1931, a team of surgeons performed the first public facelift. By time surgeons.

There are about 30 surgeries known in our modern world. For example; for eyes’ face and head we have facelifting, forehead lifting, eyelid lifting, ear reshaping and pinning, lip augmentation, craniosynostosis…etc. other types of procedures such as breast augmentation and reduction, abdominoplasty, liposuction, botox and filler injections, tattoo removal, hair laser removal, and many more. Botox, fillers and lip augmentation are done by almost all women nowadays. Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin obtained from bacteria, even though it is deadly in large amounts, the tiny, regulated amount of Botox given to correct wrinkles has been safely used for decades. Botox can only work on wrinkles caused by muscle movement such as the “11” between eyebrows and it lasts up to 4 months. When your goal is to make yourself look better in any form, the first option that strikes your mind is plastic surgery. Some advantages are the ability to use a hand, remove skin cancer, close an open wound. Surgeries like rhinoplasty and skin surgeries…etc. A huge disadvantage of plastic surgeries is the chances of the surgery being done goes wrong. Some women are criticized for getting cosmetic surgeries done. Surgeons are going to get criticized if anything goes wrong. This industry specifically faces criticism from many people.

Surgeries like these are very costly and expensive. The average national costs (United States) for breast augmentation is about $6450 give or take. For a facelift, one pays around $12,125 maybe, even more, depending on the reputation of the surgeon. Side effects of surgeries are brutal for some people. For example, some of the side effects of Botox injections are drooping of the eyelid or brow if injected near the eye, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, gallbladder problems. Generic side effects may be physical pain, blood loss, allergic reactions, hair loss, nerve injury…etc.

In a nutshell, some people choose to ignore the disadvantages and the costs and get surgeries done just to live up to society’s standards. One should embrace natural beauty and avoid going under the knife for their sake, after all; surgeons may mess up and everything could go wrong. Only then, people will regret going under the knife.
