Positive and Negative effects of Plastic Surgery

Categories: Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery was designed to make the human body look better. Thousands of people have these operations done every year to change their face and body. When people think about having plastic surgery procedures, they think about how beautiful they will look once they have healed. They anticipate how much better their life will be when they finally had the rhinoplasty or breast augmentation that they had been dreaming about. What many of these people do not realize is there are negative effects to the surgery, ranging from emotional issues to cost and risks they take when they lie on the table.

Many plastic surgery patients make the mistake of thinking that plastic surgery will completely change how they look. Those who expect to become supermodels overnight are often let down by even a good result because it’s not what they imagined.

It is important to have realistic expectations for what surgery can do. In the worst cases, patients unrealistic expectations can cause them slip into depression during their recovery period.

The unattractive bruising and swelling that often accompanies plastic surgery can worsen this effect, because patients often look much worse before they look better. Though thousands of people undergo plastic surgery every year, there are some side effects to the procedures. This varies depending on the exact operation. Some patients have experienced headaches, nausea and prolonged pain. Another common side effect is inflammation, surrounding the area of the body where the procedure was done. These side effects generally dissipate over time but can be bad at the beginning.

Many patients do not prepare themselves for the permanency of plastic surgery. When they do not like the result, they may feel massive regret or guilt for having taking such permanent measures. Some unsatisfied plastic surgeries patients may feel anger toward their surgeon for “botching” their procedure. Unfortunately, plastic surgery is an art form, and patients need to be prepared that not all the results will be to plan. Also plastic surgery is a very expensive method, leading patients to suffer pressure to pay the entire amount even if they cannot afford it. When the cost is spread over a payment plan, it can cause more stress. Risks are a negative side effect of plastic surgery because they are dramatic and varying. Whenever an individual steps under the knife, they open themselves up to risks associated with the surgery. There are cases of individuals dying on the operating table, even during a routine procedure.

The individual also has to worry about risks associated with an infections, allergic reactions and organ failure. These only occur in small cases, but are still something to consider. Many people believe that to be happy in life and be beautiful to all that see them, they must have the beautiful bodies of runway supermodels. With the advertisement of products today and the idolization of actors and actresses also come the repercussions. Not only will older generations begin to have a distorted view of what a person should look like, the new generations of tomorrow will also be more likely to have more problems as a result of low self-esteem and poor body image.

We should not only cut back on the use of cosmetic surgery for safety reasons but also because is destroying the simple beauty of a person begin who they are. Generations to come will grow up feeling that they are being judged on not who they are as a person, but how they look. If they don’t look like a supermodel they have come to believe as perfect beauty, then they will not believe in themselves, causing psychological problems. People considering plastic surgery should be informed of all risks. They should not be concerned with trying to live up to society’s standards and by the price of operations. They should most be concerned with the real price, their lives.
