Animals: Wild or Caged?

Animals, just like human being, need a good place to live and need good food to eat. While most people think that the ideal place to ensure the survival of animals is to let them live in their natural habitat. However, in practice, animals are hold in captivity in zoos under the statement that they are being preserved and they are used to entertain people in circuses. This essay will discuss the statement that "the place of animals is in the wild, not in the zoo or circuses."

Africa is the ideal place to discuss animals in the wild.

Wild animals such as zebras, lions, elephants among others seem to be totally healthy and happy where we watch documentaries about wildlife on television. We get the opportunity to see how they hunt for food, how they protect their territories and their families and how they feel at home. They are free to do whatever they want. For example, sleep whenever they wish to, eat whenever they are hungry and so on.

They are of no disturbance to human beings unless the latter do something that would make them angry.

However, when we see them in the zoo, it is a whole lot different thing. Wildlife animals become mere objects of attraction. The lion for example, is known to be a very dangerous animal but in the zoo, lions are very calm and silent, almost like a cat. This not only provide an artificial view of animals but is also an indication that they have been tamed to be as such.

Often taming of animals usually involve cruel actions from the part human beings. And often, animals cannot reproduce in captivity. The number of the same species are limited. Nevertheless, some zoos have reproduced open zoos, that is, animals have the same milieu as they would have in their natural habitat. They are safe from poachers.

Also, in circuses, they have to be trained in order to perform the stunts that are reserved to them. They spend hours practicing their role and there is no guarantee that they are acquiring the same amount of sleep that they would have acquired if they were in the wild. They are controlled by human beings and are used to make money. This is quite unfair. But the bright side of it is that the audience gets the opportunity to witness what these wildlife animals are capable of doing. And they never fail to amaze people.

Finally, it can be argued that holding animals in captivity will only make them feel sad and lonely. Some zoos have learnt the lesson and have implemented new ways of designing the zoos to provide the same milieu for animals. However, in terms of ecological equilibrium, the beauty of animals is often noticed only in their natural habitat.
