A blast of cool air greeted me as I stepped through the glass doors of the stadium. Boisterous chatters filled my ears and the multitude of colours of the jerseys momentarily blinded me. I had been selected to represent my school in the National Running Competition. My parents and teachers had high hopes for me as they all felt that I had potential in running. I made my way towards the bench, placed my bag on it and changed into my running shoes.
Just then, I spotted the shiny gold trophy.
My heart longed for it and I thought, "I must get my hands on that trophy!"
As I looked at my watch, I realised that it was only ten minutes until the competition started! My hands turned cold and clammy with sweat as my heart started to race. "Calm down, it is okay," I tried to reassure myself, but to no avail. I was jittery as I did my warm-ups.
Just then, the emcee announced, "Runners, please make your way to the track now! The competition is starting soon!" Taking in deep breaths, I tried to take confident strides towards the track.
Out of the corner of my eye, I espied my parents and best friends cheering loudly for me," You can do it, Elyn! Don't worry!"
I broke into a resplendent smile upon hearing this and I became even more determined to win the competition. Just then, I caught sight of my strongest opponent, Jane, who had beaten me last year.
As she walked past me, she smirked and sniggered at me, "I'm going to win you again this year! Don't bother trying!"
I tried my best to brush her comment aside but the thought of losing was too unbearable.
I gritted my teeth, determined to do my best to beat her. As the runners were all getting ready at the starting line, my heart was ricocheting wildly against my ribcage. Beads of perspiration dotted my forehead and I wiped the sweat off my palms. Taking deep breaths, I thought to myself, "You can do this. Ignore what Jane had said earlier. You are not a loser," Not long after, the emcee announced, "Runners, get into your starting positions now!"
Jumping up and down to calm my nerves, I got into my starting position. "Loser," Jane mouthed to me. Rolling my eyes, I eyed the finishing line and the yellow ribbon. I must win! Bang! The piston sounded and we took off at lightning speed. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I could feel the wind in my face and my ponytail swinging in all directions.
Suddenly, I felt a searing pain in my leg and I slowed down. "Ouch!" I screamed softly. Oh no! I thought. It was what I feared - leg cramps. Tears started welling up in my eyes due to the pain. At that point of time, I felt like throwing in the towel and giving up as my leg was simply too painful. However, the sight of my parents and best friends cheering for me suddenly popped into my mind. I had trained so hard for this and I could not let the many hours of training go to waste! I could not let them down!
I felt a sudden rush of adrenaline coursing through me and I started running at breakneck speed, ignoring the sharp pain I felt in my leg. Everything around me was a blur. As I swept pass someone donned in blue, I thought, one down, five more to go. This happened four times until I had one more to go. I knew it was Jane and I had to beat her. Using all my energy, I sprinted forward even faster, until I was neck- to-neck with her. I urged myself to go faster and with a last burst of energy, I bolted past her! All was clear, except for the yellow ribbon that was just so close...
As I felt something snap at my waist, rapturous applause filled the air. Suffused with a feeling of accomplishment, I pumped my right fist up in the air. I had won! I had finally won! As I stood on the podium, enjoying that moment of triumph, I was presented with the coveted, gleaming gold trophy that I had been yearning for. I was as pleased as punch and grinned from ear to ear as people around me congratulated me and clapped me on the back. It was such a sweet victory! This was what I have been waiting for all my life! Finally, all my months of training and hard work had finally paid mind for many off! It was a sweet first victory which would be indelibly etched in my years to come.
