You are what you eat

Categories: Nutrition

We all know the saying "You are what you eat", but in actuality, you are what you absorb. The reason why this is the absolute truth is because whatever we eat ends up in our stomach and our stomach has to process this food down and take in all the nutrients for our body. This isn't possible without the digestive system. Lack of digestion causes so many problems like diarhhea, constipation, etc. Can you picture yourself all bloated up and distressed? It doesn't look very pretty.

Here are some handy tips to ensure that your body gets all the nutrients it needs and keeps healthy.

Take a break after your meal

It may not look like it but digestion is a very long and complex process inside your stomach. Take some time off and sit down peacefully for a bit after eating something. Especially something heavy. Allow your body to focus on absorbing everything.

Don't eat too much

Sometimes we tend to overestimate our capacities and tend to stuff our faces with delicious food.

Although this isn't a bad thing, it’s a good idea to eat only as much as you should. All the food in your stomach waits in line to be digested, and having an excessive amount is bad for digestion.

Avoid stale food

Fresh food is the right step to take towards achieving proper digestion. Stale food leads to mouldy germs that can affect your stomach. It is better to avoid such circumstances from happening.

No raw food

Raw food is a big no for digestion.

Since ancient times, man has learnt to cook his food by burning it over a fire. The reason behind this is, cooked food is easier to digest. Cooked or fresh fruits and vegetables is always a better option over uncooked food.

Drink fresh juices and tea

Herbal teas and fresh juices are good for your stomach. Even hot water is good for digestion. By adding some ginger into hot water, it can be used to detoxify your body. Chamomile, peppermint, etc are also good for this same reason as they flush out all the unnecessary elements from your body.

Remember to chew

Chewing on your food is as important as digestion. In fact, it is slightly more significant because without chewing your food, your stomach takes longer to digest. The food we eat needs to be processed down into smaller particles in order for the nutrients in it to be absorbed properly. Chewing on your food only makes this easier.

By keeping in mind these tips we have provided, you should be good with digesting your food. These are simple measures that can easily be added into your daily lives however, if after implementing them there still happens to be the occurrence of digestive disorders then it is advised to seek the help of a professional.
