Fuller: My answer is “Yes”, Mrs. Hutchinson, women are equal to the men and very often they are more intellectually gifted and developed then the so-called “rougher sex” as they call themselves. Nevertheless when you say that women are still inferior to the man in some of the cases I oppose your statement. I strongly believe that women could achieve success in all social spheres. When they ask me where women can fail I answer that there’s no such sphere, the women could be even sea captains if they want, I reckon.
I strongly believe in the intellectual equality between the sexes and object the inferiority complex that most of women possess.
In one of my most quoted ideas I articulated the following: “I now know all the people worth knowing in America, and I find no intellect comparable to my own! ” Isn’t my own example a good illustration to the ideas of women superiority! Women to my mind, perform key cultural role in society, they further Western civilization and made a crucial impact on the development of American political culture.
Femininity to my mind could be rather associated not with a pure androgynous aspect but with the agent of genius.

I also admire some of your revolutionary religious outlooks, Mrs. Hutchinson, particularly the idea of equality of men and women before the God. I developed these ideas according to the more progressive XIX century. I believe, as well as you did, that soul is sexlessness and un-gendered! I believe that we will achieve the society in which gender scripts have no particular cultural meaning.

As I said before, God created as equal and it’s not men’s responsibility to abolish women’s rights. Fuller: That’s what I personally think. Let me tell you one of my ideas concerning the issue: “What woman needs is not as a woman to act or rule, but as a nature to grow, as an intellect to discern, as a soul to live freely, and unimpeded to unfold such powers as were given her when we left our common home”. I could also prove my idea of men and women’s nature psychologically. To my mind, males and females represent the two sides of the society in general.
However, there are no pure men as well as pure women, we are all interrelated and interpenetrated in this society. Our appearance, as you’ve already said is only a physical aspect but we are to focus on more deep mental specificities of men and women. I believe that is no wholly masculine man, no purely feminine woman and, in fact, they are perpetually passing into one another like fluid hardens to solid, solid rushes to fluid. You know that in my times men didn’t share any feminists’ outlooks and their opinions were strongly repressed. Is there any progress in the field, I mean did official and personal perception of the women’ role changed, are we more recognized in our male-centered society? Fuller: Half-and-half I should say. Of course in XIX century we live in a more enlightened epoch where the whole perception of life has changed. Rapid social changes, French revolution, Industrialization and multiple social movements declared diverse principles of social existence tat in many aspects contradict with the puritan’s outlooks.
Equality and fraternity motto also partially relates to the relationships between the genders. Many men of my social environment completely share my ideas concerning women’s roles in the society. Thus, there’s a serious progress in this aspect; at least no one amidst the noble believes that women are to be women are to follow the criteria of Domesticity so devotedly as in your times. At the same time there are a lot of people who still despise women but such people are rather to be despised themselves I’m sure.
To summarize my answer on your question I should say that our society is now relatively more tolerable to women in many aspects. The ideas you’d be severely punished in your times now could be easily and scot-free shared. That’s the progress in the field to my mind. I could also mention some other progresses, i. e. : more women obtain education nowadays that was partially prohibited in your times; they are relatively more socially free and independent. Nevertheless, there are a lot of aspects in which women leg behind.
Women are still married according to their parents’ will in many cases, for instance. Political and social achievements are also inaccessible by the women. Hutchinson: I see, Mrs. Fuller, the progress is indeed sufficient. Still I believe that we should fight for complete equality of men and women in future. I’m sure that in a century we shall achieve complete equality between the genders. Fuller: Yes. I will also tell you my original words concerning women’s prospects in the United States: “We would have every arbitrary barrier thrown down.
We would have every path laid open to women as freely as to men”.
