“Millions of people saw an apple fall, but Newton was the one who asked why”, said Bernard Mannes Baruch (1870 – 1965) an advisor to more than 40 Presidents. And that is why I chose the major Engineering, because I just want to know why. Why do planes fly? Why does the Sun shine? I believe that Engineering is the answer to all of the scientific questions asked. The definition of Engineer is a person that is an expert in technology. They design machines, computer programs, buildings, and chemical processes.
They use science to build better things that help us everyday in everyway. Without engineers, the world would stop. My father is an engineer, graduated from the University of Poona in the state of Maharashtra, India. Therefore, since my dad was an engineer, great importance was attached to subjects like Math and Science from a very young age. Those subjects were always first priority because with those subjects, it is possible to do anything.
I completed the “O”tm Level examinations with good grades in subjects like Ordinary Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry, which further reinforced my decision to go for Engineering major.
I also liked to read a lot; stuff like mysteries, autobiographies of interesting people appealed to me a lot. I am now in the transfer program called ADP or American Degree Program. The whole project took me two-months to complete. Speaking of computers, I had to do a project for the Computer subject in 10th grade for the examination called the “O”tm Levels.
My strong Mathematics and Science background combined with your excellent teaching staff, facilities and comfortable location are the perfect remedy for me to achieve my lifelong goals. Although I do concentrate a lot on my academic performance, I put a lot of effort in extra-curricular activities.
That course was a breeze for me as the lecturers were very well trained and fun which allowed me to be very interested in the workings of a computer. Anyways, that is what I always thought and did my best in those two subjects, Math and Science. My friends and I, who are cricket enthusiasts, formed a cricket team in our high school. I keep an ideal balance between my academic accomplishments and my extra-curricular activities, which makes me a fine all-rounder. bers, is universal! Everybody uses numbers and everybody needs them. The project was a Database Management System that can be applied in real-life using the QBASIC computer-programming language. My dad had a big atlas that he had received from Reader”tms Digest magazine and I used to look through it every time.

When I was younger, I was asked a question that is generally common for young children: What did I want to be when I grow up? Most people do not usually think that a child as young as five years old knows what they want to do for the rest of their life. What people want to hear is the possibility of what life can bring you, and what you can bring yourself. They are looking for some kind of reassurance that youth is still innocent of the world, and that dreams can come true. My dream, as a young child, was never very constant. Over the years my potential career list has included: doctor, actress, astronaut, business woman, lawyer, and engineer. To this day, I am still not sure exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life. However, what I do know is how I am going to accomplish it. I am going to study engineering.
Engineering has the gift of being a very versatile major; after earning a Bachelor of Science in the field I could easy move on to any of the careers of my childhood list. My educational goal is to earn an undergraduate degree in engineering, then to continue my education in a field that I adore. As far as my career goals go, the sky is the limit. My parents always tell me that I can do whatever I set my mind to, and I believe them. I can be successful at whatever I try. The only requirement I have of my future career is that it does good to others in some kind way, for my true measurement of success will be how many lives I make better along the way.

I believe that it is essential to pursue a subject in which one not only has the aptitude to excel but also finds a natural interest. For myself, I find that engineering is a field that serves both purposes. It is fascinating to explore the technical properties of our surroundings and the internal mechanism of the devices we use every day. As physics deals with the rudimentary mechanics of the world, I have found physics and mathematics significantly more interesting than any other subject from a young age. These subjects pose everyday questions which can be solved through logical deduction, and I find the application of theoretical knowledge to understand the world around me to be intensely engaging. Physics is a subject which helps me understand the world around me. From the rolling of a ball to the mechanism of a motor, there was not a single topic that I could not relate to.
This ability to explain the world around me in basic and simple terms, to the point of breaking down nature to mathematics, has appealed to me greatly. Understanding physics have given me a new perspective of the world around me. Thus I want to study a subject and pursue a career in a subject which deals with a branch of applied physics and mathematics. I was never satisfied with gaining knowledge from books and locking it up in my head. I have always been keen to find the practical application of the laws and principles postulated by physics. This accounts for my interest in engineering. After all, engineers are people who put the knowledge of physics into practical applications by solving daily problems and innovating new devices to make life easier. That is the person I aspire to be, to use my knowledge and apply it to make the lives of other people just a little bit easier. Furthermore, my good grades in O-level and A-level mathematics, physics and chemistry have given me the confidence to choose engineering as the subject for further studies. I have always been a dreamer and a patriotic person.
Coming from a third world country, I have always dreamed my country to be a developed country with better infrastructure, with electricity and water supplies at every home. I feel helpless when I see a eighty year old man, barely able to walk crossing a stream in waist high water due to lack of bridge. I wonder when the countryside of my country will be illuminated with electric supplies. I wonder when the school children of my countryside of my age will encounter the most fast and efficient form of communication: Internet. I wonder when my dreams of a developed Bangladesh will come true. I believe knowledge of science is the biggest tool for development and engineers are the key persons to make use of that tool. There are limitless possibilities for engineers in my country. That is why, for now, I want to explore this fascinating subject which will help me realize my dreams and keep the task of choosing a specific major for future.
