Why My Vote Matters

In the year 2000 the presidential election was going on, Gore vs. Bush, On December 9, the Court had announced the Florida recount that was occurring. Bush ended up winning the election by 537 votes, that shows to all of the people that think their vote doesn't matter that if they would’ve voted they could’ve made a change. In 2016 around 58% of eligible voters went to the poll and voted, which is not a lot. If more people went to vote there could’ve been many different presidents, especially if some the votes are very close.

You should vote because we all have the opportunity to exercise our rights as citizens and cast our ballots for the person we think will be the best president throughout the next four plus years.

‘’I’m only one person I can’t make a change’’ That is where you’re wrong. You can easily make a change, if millions people stay home because they think their votes don't count, Also if you don’t vote you have no reason to complain, you didn’t even make an attempt to make a change and you didn’t even vote.

Voting is very important because you can voice your opinion also it holds elected officials accountable for their behavior while in office. Voting is a privilege that many people take for granted. Citizens of Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, or the United States Virgin Islands have no voting rights for national or presidential elections. These people can hardly voice their opinion and when they do it hardly matters.

In some other countries like Australia, Chile, Cyprus, non voters can be fined, In Argentina non voters are fined and some of their civil rights are removed.

According to data from the U.S. Census, the amount of voters in the United States is currently the lowest in the entire developed world. In the last presidential election, only 53 percent of Americans voted. There are over 240 million eligible Americans, yet over nearly 100 million yearly who choose not to vote. 59 percent of non-voting Americans believed that there is no point in voting because “nothing ever gets done,” 54 percent don’t vote because they believe the U.S. Government is “so corrupt,” and 37 percent believe that voting “doesn’t make much difference my life.”

Kennedy and Richard Nixon was the closest presidential election in U.S. history Kennedy won the race by 0.1 percent. That is a race that was lost be a few hundreds votes. That shows even the huge elections with millions of voters that every single vote matters, and every single person makes a difference.
