When I think of the Emergence of Modern America, I think of World War I. Although many argue that the Industrial Revolution is more prevalent, I believe World War I is when the Industrial Revolution truly came together and showed the world just how powerful America is. This was the point that secured the United States as a superpower and the greatest industrialized country in the world.
This can be seen through the fact that at the beginning of the war all countries turned the United States to provide ammunition and other resources necessary during the war. The United States was originally supplying Germany as well, but then switched to Britain and the allies once Germany invaded Belgium. This led to Germany sinking our ships because they did not want Britain to receive supplies. Germany also became mad that we sided with Britain and tried to get Mexico to attack the United States so that we would become
These acts of war from Germany are another reason it was necessary for the United States to go to war. Around the time of the Zimmerman note, public support had been growing for the United States to get involved in the war, especially after the sinking of the Lusitania. The public was ready to support the war and were outraged at Germany's actions. They wanted
Woodrow Wilson to get the United States involved, even though he had been elected on the very promise that he would not. Eventually Wilson listened to the outcry and declared war. If war had never been declared, the United States would not only have looked weak, but would have had no say in the aftermath of the war. Germany would have also stood a greater chance of defeating Britain and France, and may in fact have won. With Germany as a victor of World War I, all of European history and world history would be drastically changed.
If Germany had won WWI, the country would likely have become a superpower, possibly greater than the United States. There would have been no WWII, or it would at least have been much later. There would have been no break-up of Austria-Hungary or the Ottoman Empire. Overall the world would be a much different place. The United States needed to enter the great war in order to secure their power and shape the world into what it has become today. I am not saying the world is much better today, but things would have been much different and the United States would be much less powerful and different.
WWI pretty much secured the right to vote for women, giving them more power than ever before, and leading the way for women's rights to grow. Without United States involvement and men going off to war, women would never have gotten more involved in the public sphere to show they deserve to vote. WWI also led the way for the "roaring twenties" and the upswing in United States economy. War always tends to be good for the economy. The United States' involvement in WWI was essential because it changed so many things and secured the United States as a world economic superpower.
The worst thing about WWI was the aftermath and how the victors barely listened to Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points. If these had been followed more closely and not just created a League of Nations, it could have prevented a World War II and made the world more prosperous and better than it is today. Unfortunately they did not listen and WWI was a precursor to WWII and Europe did not learn their lesson. However, without WWI so many things would not have happened and the United States getting involved was a necessary event in history to make the world what it is today.
