Where to Invade Next: A Comedy at a Glance

At first glance, Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next” seems to be a comedic movie based on the insanity of U.S history, but it turns out to be a powerful film filled with a humanizing vision of better solutions, possibilities on how the US shares their historical roots, that challenge the brutal and degrading reality of gross inequality fostered by the endless greed of the power elites. In the film, one gets to know Moore as a person, and he comes across as a genuinely decent man—a wounded idealist who knows that much better is possible for the average US citizen and that the American history should not be whitewashed.

Analysis of the Scene in Where to Invade Next

The first shot of the scene was a zoomed in shot of Thomas Sattleberger, the Former Executive of Mercedes Benz talking about the benefits of having the workers are on their side, and why the listen to the company.

Then it changes the shot to Ralf Heyen, the Director of Human Resources, and Moore asking why the management should side listen to the workers rather than just tell them what to do. Ralf then told him that worker sometimes provide good suggestions and ideas. Then the shot switches to a footage that zoomed a Nuremberg’s city, it then zooms in to a street sign which is written in Germany.

While taking this shot, the camera was slightly tilted filming not only the sign, but also the moss and the dirt. The photo was taken at a height lower than the street sign, which gives more focus on the shot and acknowledges the audience that this sign has been there for a pretty long time. The narrator than explained that the street sign is left from the Nazis, they implemented these signs to criminalize the Jewish. These signs are placed all over the city and it reminds the Germans of horrors. Compared to the world we are in today, a society that employers actually take in employee’s opinions, the world in the past history seems like a tragedy.

Representation of Nationalism in Where to Invade Next

The second shot starts with a footage of the Triumph of the Will and lasted around 8 seconds. It is in black and white video footage of Hitler and his marching in the city. Hitler has an arrogant expression on his face and his arms were crossed. The footage showed that Hitler was in a podium, then the cameras takes a tracking shot of the marching army with a background of celebrating music. The entire 8 seconds of footage emphasizes on the guns and flags carried by every soldier, there was even a shot that stopped on that shot. This scene stroked me of how nationalism is represented at that period of time and what matters the most to people in the past. The black and white video of the past history reminds the generation we are in today of the cruel and genocide in the past.

The Masterpiece of Filmography in the Movie

The third scene is the most heartbreaking scene among my chosen scenes. I also think that it is the most remarkable scene throughout the film. The scene started with a teacher telling her students a story about a suitcase. The suitcase is made with brown leather and was written with some words with a white marker, she told the children’ that this belongs to a man who was asked to leave Berlin and deported to a concentration camp. Then the filmmaker asks the child, “if you knew that you were never coming back, what would you bring with you?” Without interfering with the child’s decision, the suitcase soon was filled with items that the students picked. The camera zooms in into the suitcase, and in the camera a little girl was looking straight forwardly to the camera. The overlap from the current zoom in of the little girl’s face to the past footage of the girl looking into the camera represents the same atmosphere and emotion while really facing this kind of situation. The scene ends on a close zoom in on a German writing on the classroom’s board. “Why Remember?” After the close zoom in, the camera zooms into Annika Schmidt face, she said that she saw the survivors and heard their stories. When she said that she will “Never forget it”, the camera slowly zooms in and we can see the sorrow on her face. The scene ends with a focus on a photo of Hitler and his armies on the textbook. By taking a close shot on different student’s faces when they are flipping through the textbook, the narrator says, “They don’t white wash it, they don’t pretend it didn’t happen, they don’t just say this is before my time , what does this got to do with me?” The looks on their face tells a message, they do remember.
