From Dream to Reality: Winning the Creative Writing Contest

Categories: Free Essays

A fairytale comes true: sitting at the Frog Fountain, scribbling my entry to the annual Creative Writing Contest or descant. I dream of submitting prose that would illustrate the talent and uniqueness of TCU students. I could benefit greatly from the WRIT Writing Internship, which would help me professionally improve my written and oral communication. I am enthusiastic to help organizations working with the Disciples of Christ. TCU’s high academic standards attracted me immediately, and so did its fun side.

From the annual concert to the Wakeboarding club, TCU’s offerings match my spunk. How would you describe your personal character?

Helpful. With a cup of coffee and an encouraging smile, I tutor a close friend by explaining math problems, flipping flashcards, and never complaining. Creative. During rehearsal for the upcoming play, I sculpt a character out of simple directions from the script. Welcoming. I take orders and decorate sundaes, shakes, and banana splits. Customers often comment: “You’re so good at your job, I don’t know how you’re so friendly.” Dedicated.

After a long day of school, I haul out my textbooks.

Between answering texts from my friends as we digitally plow through our homework, I complete every assignment with perfection. Trey Philpotts. The College of Arts and Humanities is brimming with a unique talent I long to be a part of; a community of songwriters, publishers, costume designers.

In this college, I would love to encourage research of language for English majors. I could bring new ideas to the community and perhaps introduce new writing styles. Involvement in the Catholic Campus Ministry and the Heartfulness Meditation Experience would bolster my compassion that I could translate into good works around campus and around the world. I would love to be a part of service programs at UCF like the American Medical Women's Association and the Active Minds Association. I hope to join the Writers Uknighted Club so I can share my ideas and prose and gain insight on my writing before I submit it to the national literary magazine.

I’m enthusiastic to be a part of the publishing team for The Florida Review! I want to learn how to publish the magazine in both hard copy and online and become a skilled editor from this experience. Additionally, I could submit prose that was modern, unique, and eye-catching to expand the already high relevance of the magazine. With the beautiful campus and high school spirit, UCF would be my heaven on Earth. Discuss your reasons for pursuing the academic program (major) selected above. Writing stories began a hobby, but as the years went on it has become my past, present, and most importantly, my future. The pages and pages that I’ve written helped define my view of the world as writing became central of my self-identity. Now, when I hear raindrops thundering on the rooftop, they symbolize baptism. When life throws something unexpected my way, I think “Oh my gosh, plot twist!” I do not simply like writing. I am a writer.

My passion for creative writing has directed my life onto the path towards publishing my own works of fiction. By gaining the knowledge I need in college, my novels will embody my passion; I will create moving, exciting, and life-changing pieces of literature. My end goal is not only publishing works, however. My mission extends further. I desire to touch the lives of the individuals who read my novels. Embellished with success stories, themes of overcoming failure, and positive messages, I want my novels to impact individuals and communities. I plan to direct my writing for young adults who are the future of the world and can make a change for the better.

My books can be a part of the transformation of teenagers into generous and productive adults. I know that the study of Creative Writing and English at UCF is a huge piece of how I will become a successful writer. With a prestigious education at UCF, I know that I will achieve my dreams. Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. My stomach sank faster than the Titanic as I looked at the cup in my hands. I mixed butterscotch instead of caramel into the Turtle Sundae—a rookie mistake. Trying to swallow my fear, I tentatively showed my boss the failure. Donna’s lips pursed as she hurled the sundae into the garbage can. My lips formed the word sorry as I hovered over her shoulder as she decorated the sundae with the correct toppings. As a shy and sensitive new employee, the intensity of a service position at the Frozen Custard Shop intimated me. I was thrown head-first into the action.

The Saturday night rush, full of complicated orders and annoyed customers, never seemed to end. My legs grew sore, running from the hot fudge pump to deliver my sundae to the customer. On top of that, the demeaning looks from the other girls made me want to shrink. Adapting to the situation was the key to overcoming my fears. I held my head up and readied myself for the fast-paced environment each time I walked through the doors. To keep me on track, I frequently double-checked my recipes with the other girls, filling the awkward silences. I braved a smile for the customers, handing them the treats that I’d poured my resolve into. By forcing myself out of my shell, my mistakes dwindled. Fast-forward to the present day. “Watch Liesl make her sundaes,” Donna informs the new employee. “Try to follow her example.” With ease, I give the girl my most encouraging smile.
