What is the American Dream Today?

The American Dream is the idea of anyone, born in America or not, to have equal opportunities. It is the belief that anyone can succeed with hard work and dedication. People born in America have the benefits of not worrying about being deported, they can vote, and get more education opportunities as well as jobs. America does not provide access to the American Dream for everyone because race has always been an issue. When most people think of an American they usually picture a white person.

On July 9, 1868 the 14th amendment granted citizenship to all people born in the United States and guaranteed 'equal protection of the laws' to any citizen. This amendment was known to be the longest amendment to the constitution. Race, religion, or skin color didn't matter as long as you were born within the United States of America. Discrimination has always been a problem in America because there's a lot of people who are convinced only Caucasian people should be considered American.

People of color are usually pushed to the side when it comes to getting support from the government. The main reason for that is because of their skin tone. A rapper named Ice Cube wrote a rap called 'A Bird In The Hand' about how black people live to survive in America. He quotes, 'Do I gotta go sell me a whole lotta crack for decent shelter and clothes on my back?.

.. Cuz blacks are too fucken broke to be republican.' He says this because blacks won't get much support from the government because they're 'too broke' and in order to make money they have to go out to the streets to sell drugs to be able to have food and a roof over their head and survive.

He doesn't believe that America provides access to the American Dream because they don't get the same opportunities a white person does so they have to find other ways to survive. He also quotes ' Now everybody know I went from po' to a nigga that got dough so now you put the fed against me cause I couldn't follow the plan of the presidency.' Ice Cube shows how unfair the system is because the government didn't give him support and he couldn't find a decent job and the only way to get money was through selling drugs and now that he has money the government wants to put him in jail.
