What Did I Learn In Public Speaking Class

Public speaking can be daunting for most people. However, it is important in daily life, especially as a young adult. Public speaking is a necessary skill needed for university or work activities such as oral tests and presentations. Several factors in language proficiency make me less fearful of public speaking such as grammatical skills, an extensive vocabulary range, and overall fluency which ties into my confidence. So, what I learned in public speaking class?

My first language is English and thus I have been familiar with it for about two decades.

I was educated at schools where I was taught in English which has helped me develop my grammatical skills. The techniques used to teach me included completing grammatical exercises and reading recommended academic texts. I reinforced those skills by keeping up the habit of reading scholarly works even after completing my secondary education. In addition to that, I am quite fond of reading fiction as well. Most fictional works are descriptive to evoke the audience’s imagination and as such uses many new, different words that helped expand my vocabulary.

English is the primary language that I am exposed to in my daily life in various forms. This includes English-speaking friends and family, my current tertiary education as well as my entertainment media. All of these elements have aided me in achieving a degree of fluency in English which has boosted my confidence. Again, my education has assisted in building my confidence as many of my subjects have required oral presentations in front of teachers and classmates.

This led to another experience that strengthened my confidence. A teacher noticed my interests and requested I present a topic that I am passionate about to my school at the morning assembly. I did my best to research, compile and organize my thoughts into a written form as well as memorize it. I got through my fear by pretending I was only presenting my speech to my peers. I was commended by several other teachers which reinforced my sense of confidence.

Public speaking will always be present in any productive person’s life in some manner. I believe, because of English being my first language and therefore the time and practice I have had, my love for reading, my education that consisted of oral tests as well as nurturing teachers, I will not be paralyzed with fear when I have to do it for any future university or work projects.
