Having a baby is not always a good thing for everyone. It is a godsend for long-term infertile couples to have a baby, but it may be a burden for others. Abortion has always been a controversial topic. Stress from social paradoxes, and family and religious beliefs put women in a difficult position and even threaten their lives.
In the 1950s, abortion was illegal. Claire tried to abort herself by taking the medicine, but she repented and vomited the pills. From this point, I can see she was not ready, and she was still hesitating.
However, giving birth to this child is not ethical. If the child was born, all the neighbors around her would talk about that, and it’s a kind of a shame to her and her family. Even if the child was born, many people would not favor him because they regard him as an immoral thing, which destroyed social customs. Consequently, she had no choice but to have an abortion.
If someone could give her financial assistance to help her have a miscarriage in a clean environment, she would never let the physician who used unsterilized surgical tools do the surgery for her. If contraception was legal at that time, who would hurt themselves in this way, and put their lives at risk?
In the second story, Barbara hesitated whether or not to have an abortion because the baby brought obstacles to her ideals and family life. In the end, she chose to keep the baby.
Perhaps she felt she could not balance her family and her ideals like the historical poet. I believe the decision she made was as discreet as she was an adult woman, and she knew the consequences of the decision and the problems that would come up in the future. Barbara had been pursuing her inner thoughts, and I think the decision she made was to be brave to do her performance.
In the 1990s, abortion was already legal but was ere were still many opponents because of religious beliefs. The Catholic Church opposes abortion because it’s about a guarantee of human rights. People have no right to deprive others of their right to exist. Catholics and Christians believe that an embryo that is fertilized in the womb is already alive. Since he is an individual, he has human rights, and there is no right to deprive him of his right to live and his right to come into the world.
At the end of the movie, the anti-abortionist shot the doctor, and Anne held the bloody doctor yelling for help. The word “help” represent the voices of thousands of women. Everyone makes mistakes in their lives, and they are eager to get help. Abortion is already a psychological and physical injury for women. They should not be attacked by words and hurt by society. Women are the people who bring life to the world. Children are born in their bodies. They have the right to decide the survival of their children.
