Not only in football, this technology is equally important in other sports such as cricket, hockey, basketball, tennis etc. as well as major sporting events like Olympics, South Asian Games etc. In cricket, umpires can make decisions such as whether the ball has crossed the boundary, whether the player is run out, stumpings, doubtful catches etc. Similarly, in hockey, video technology helps the umpire to know whether the goal has been validly scored or not.

Instant replay is undoubtedly the most popular feature of video technology used in sports, that replay the video in slow motion so that audience can analyze what just happened.

Sometimes, after reviewing the instant replay, the wrong decisions made by referees and umpires are overturned, which alter the results of the game.

It has contributed a lot in increasing the number of viewers and increased people's interest in sports. Due to this, sports in modern times have been commercialized and there are many people, clubs and organizations that spend a huge sum of money to sponsor various teams and events. Because of this, the income level of players has increased dramatically nowadays. Many young people are interested in sports and want to become a national-level player someday. Engagement in sports make people healthy and fit. Not only this, it helps to reduce stress and depression and increase the life span.

Disadvantages of using video technology in sports

However, the use of video technology has several drawbacks or disadvantages too. Nowadays, almost all the sports are telecasted live on TV and internet. So, most people who love sport just sit in from their TV or PC and watch the game while having snacks and drinks. They hardly participate in any sport or game. It makes them unhealthy, obese and decrease their life span. Modern technology has made people lazy and dull, which is a bitter truth in today's world. Another disadvantage is, it can not be used in many regions of poor and developing countries because most people do not have access to TV, computer, internet or even electricity. Besides, match fixing has also become an emerging problem in modern sports. As sporting events are viewed by millions of people on TV or PC, they generate huge income to sponsors. So, there are some people who gamble on sport events and some of them also want to fix the results of games so that they can earn a huge amount of money.

Conclusions

The use of video technology has a huge contribution in making sports and games fair. Previously, when there was no such technology, the decisions made during sports by referees and umpires were mostly based on their views and perceptions. Sometimes, they even made wrong decisions that make the game unfair. But there was no way to review what exactly happened during a moment in sport. So, the decisions made by referees and umpires were final in those days. With the advancement of modern video technology, sports and games have been digitalized and almost all the modern sports are using this technology to make sports fair and better.

Therefore, this technology has lots of advantages in the field of sports. It enables better viewing experience to the audience, make sports fair and error-free, helps improve the performance of players, helps referees and umpires to take fair decisions, increase people's interest and participation, and helps to make sports safe by reducing and preventing injuries. Not only this, it also contributes in saving lives of players engaged in dangerous sports such as boxing, bike and car racing etc. Although there are some drawbacks of using this technology in sports, its benefits are unimaginable in modern times.
