Today, the waste record of the Fashion industry is increasing since Fast fashion and excessive consuming are invading the world. While waste is certainly not a new issue in the fashion industry, it has become worse in recent years, as consumption has risen and production costs have fallen, causing higher pollution rates. This dramatic situation pushed people to be far more interested than before in knowing exactly where products are coming from and how they are being made. Although consumers are still more interested in the price and style of the clothing than where and how it has been made, but that change is coming: nearly half of consumers say they prefer to buy clothing from companies trying to reduce their impact on the environment.
These steps did however ultimately convince major fashion retailers to develop and offer sustainable and fair-trade clothing.
Young people around the world are working to clean up a dirty fashion industry thinking that as a society, they have a level of understanding of the damage being done by their throwaway culture.
A study showed that the percentage of people who agree that they would pay more for eco-friendly products is 58% among Gen Z (16-21) and 61% among Millennial (22-35). [4] Young people are not only taking initiatives to buy sustainable products, but some of them are trying to make their own sustainable brands. Nour Kays, founder of NK, a conscious fashion accessories brand made in Lebanon, is a young woman who decided to find a solution for the discarded plastic bags in Beirut.
However, it should be pointed out that a part of these generations still consider sustainable fashion more of an ethical bonus or nice-to-have, not a requirement. The primary reason: The cost. "Some people assume that since its made of "waste" it should be cheap. But they don't take into account a material went through to transform into this new product. And the fact that we are working at a craftsman level, and we value the people we work with. We are all about slow fashion, and producing in small batches" says Nour. [5] This is considered as a key concern facing the shift in consumer behavior when it comes to sustainability, especially when the most people interested in eco-friendly products - young people - have low income.
With all that in mind, switched-on clothing companies are no longer just setting up a few racks of eco clothing in the corner of a store but considering how to make their entire range more sustainable. Once known as My Ex Wardrobe, Retold Dubai specializes in upcycling secondhand wardrobes and giving clothes a new life. They accept high-street as well as designer labels and let people sell their clothes as long as they've been gently used and not visibly damaged. Okhtein Handbags (translated as sisters) is an Egyptian brand that mixes philanthropy with sustainable fashion, every handbag purchased supports local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Egypt whose mission is to help women who face financial hardship. Asmaraia is a Moscow and Dubai-based brand, breaking fashion norms with its use of organic cotton, faux fur and recycled polyester in its clothing. The designer recently debuted her FW'19 collection at Arab Fashion Week. [6]
Popular Fashion brands are now moving towards better means of production, fair trade and organic clothing. In Dubai, H&M outlets accept used clothes that can be recycled. They do not necessarily need to be from the brand, making it easy for consumers to drop off their garments and be a part of the environmentally friendly movement. According to vogue magazine, Mango recently moved into sustainable fashion, their new collection includes products, made from organic cotton and recycled polyester. Like H&M, Zara has started using recycled materials and ecologically grown cotton through the "Zara Join Life Range", a trendy and reasonably priced collection which has significantly grown in popularity since launching.
