Energy cost and Canadian households

Categories: Technology

With interest in electric power continually expanding, vitality costs have been rising gradually since the end of the twentieth century. Canadian vitality costs incorporated into the consumer price index (CPI) dramatically have increased over the two decades ranging between 1994 and 2013 (Green et al., 2016, para. 2). From 2010 to 2013, power costs have ascended by an increase of 1.31 per kWh, with some Canadian cities having an uprise of over 4 (Green et al., 2016, para. 2). On account of the expanded utility cost, the government of Ontario have taken action to integrate the smart metering device into their homes to enable consumers to adjust their habits in order to decrease electricity bills.

SMART METERING FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The developing future of connected communities requests a smart interconnection of infrastructure, energy, technological innovation and human activities. A smart meter is an advanced energy meter that measures the consumption of electrical energy, giving extra data to consumers compared to a traditional energy meter (Benzi et al., 2011). Integration of smart meters into electrical energy grid includes implementation of a range of procedures and programming, contingent on the elements that the situation demands.

, 2006). By giving a point by point data about utilization patterns, smart meters enable consumers to make informed choices to change usage and lower power bills. Numerous benefits are credited to smart metering, including energy savings for residential customers, lower metering cost, greater quality of supply, schematic pricing to attract consumers (Gerwen et al., 2006). Smart metering benefits utilities by improving consumer loyalty with quicker communication, while giving consumers more control of their power utilization to save money and diminish carbon footprint. With power visibility all the way to the meter, utilities can optimize strength distribution and even take the motion to shift demand loads.
