This assignment helps to focus on the self-reflection of the incidents that helped us to progress and improve for the future by reflecting on the incidents that occurred while attending the internship. By focussing on the mistakes that occurred and correcting them they help in focussing and increasing the level of aptitude and knowledge that we gain. It helps us to identify and differentiate the positive strengths gained and negative effects that needs to be corrected. It also helps us to differentiate between surface acting as well as deep acting.
While I was at my internship, initially I had issues as my manager told me to do certain jobs such as vacuum the dry store as well as clean the toilets.
I created an issue out of it and my manager and I had a discussion about this topic when we sat down together. Well, the reply of the manager was that you have to do this work in order to keep working or quit this internship.
Well, I had no choice obey what he asked as it was my first year and the only chance to work in Switzerland. If I had rejected his offer, I would have to leave Switzerland and find another suitable internship outside Switzerland. When they had asked me to do such jobs, inside I did have a great feeling of anger and dislike towards the job. I had to do this job, therefore I obeyed his instructions and used the method of surface acting. I always had a smile and obeyed his instructions according to what he instructed me to do.
Another incident that had occurred was that my manager instructing me to arrange the food products that was necessary for the further week.
The situation was that my manager parked the vehicle at the backside of the restaurant while he could have brought the car and parked near to the exit downstairs. He had asked me and my colleague to arrange the products accordingly in its location. Therefore, we had to store the products in a trolley and send it by the lift to the basement and store them in the fridge accordingly. While doing all of this me and my colleague thought why this person causes trouble for everyone. After work me and my colleagues were angry for what he had and had kept cool and calm face instead making him angry and abusing him which would have cost the lose our job. We had done the job and the manager was satisfied with the work we had done and this maintained the peace without causing chaos.
At the start of my internship, I had created a lot of basic mistakes which made the manager angry. An incident for example, included the refilling of the drinks and refilling of the chutney trays that we used to serve along with starter course during the a la carte during the evenings during the week and weekends. While doing the refilling of the drinks for the next day, at start I used to consume up to 45 minutes during the evenings and the manager would send me my colleague to help me out and the work finish efficiently and quickly. As months passed, my speed to do things became faster as well as consumed lower time necessary to complete a task. As 5 months passed, I used to finish all the drinks and bottling of the empty bottles in around 10 - 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the refilling of a chutney tray took me up to an hour and my manager used to get angry when he saw it. After months of practice I used to complete the task in about 10 minutes and the manager would comment that I had improved my skills and completed the tasks faster than the start of my internship. When the manager appreciated me for my efforts I would thank him and smile happily because it made me glad.
During my internship, my manager would tell me to take a break and complete the set up for the evening after opening the restaurant. I would usually take a short break to have my lunch and after that I would usually complete the job and make it complete for the evening and then leave the restaurant for relaxing at the lakeside. When the manager returns from the lunch break, I would have finished the task he handed me to complete and he would be happy to see that I did it before hand without waiting for further instructions. Before the manager returns from his lunch break, I had to open the restaurant at 5 pm and serve beers, coffee or tea to the customer before he returns. The customers usually come to the restaurant around 5 pm usually for drinking cold beers and having a talk and read the newspapers.
Another improvement that I had was that I did not require to look at the menu card and had memorised the dishes names instead of writing down in the paper. While serving the dishes to the customer we needed to know the names of the dishes and its ingredients. Each dish was prepared for the customer as per their request and based on their allergies we had specific dishes on the menu. When I used to memorise the dishes and drinks necessary to be served at a particular table my manager was surprised and happy to see that I had improved my abilities and became more confident and more focussed than before. The manager was happy and satisfied with my efforts. Making the customer satisfied as well as giving them the best service bring profit, success and reputation towards a business to meet its idealistic goals. Better service means that the reputation grows and satisfied customer.
