At the beginning of the story, hope was not expressed much. Winston seemed gloomy, as if his life would never get better. He began to feel like there was no point to live anymore. He spent most of his days drinking victory gin and smoking victory cigarettes. Winston figured he would never see the bright side. One day, to his surprise, Julia changed his outlook on life. Winston thought Julia was working with the party, which he despised.
He was amazed when she looked at him and said “I love you.” Julia felt this way because she knew he was against the party. That moment is when Winston felt like there was hope; maybe he was not alone after all. They both hated Big Brother, which made the love they had for each other stronger. This gave them two hope. They knew that since they had each other, they had the courage to take down the party.
If the party was taken down, they would no longer have to be watched or controlled. The future began to look brighter for the two of them. Winston’s outlook on life was now positive. Winston says, “If there is hope, it lies in the proles.” His reasoning was that eighty-five percent of Oceania’s population was made up of proles. The party thinks they are pathetic, but Winston views them differently; he knew they had some power to an extent. The party thinks they have all the power, but the proles stay to themselves.
They are capable of being better than the party.
Hope does not mean one thing; it means many things. Hope is seen in many different ways in people’s eyes. O’Brien said, “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.” It seemed as if he had negative views on hope. He thinks the party is creating a new world that will be worse. He does not have high hopes for the future. Things can be turned around in a split second just like Winston observed. He was on the verge of giving up and one thing turned his whole world around.
In the movie, Shawshank Redemption, hope is positive. Andy sets boundaries and did not stop until he succeeded them. If you do not set your mind right, you will not have positive hope. After Andy’s wife and her lover were murdered, it looked as if he committed the crime. He pushed himself to escape prison, because he knew there was hope on the outside; the bright side was only ahead of him. Andy’s prison friend known as Red, said, “I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.” They eventually met on a beach in Mexico and their dreams were fulfilled. Hope is positive in my opinion, just like it was for Andy. Hope makes me want to set goals. There is not much positive hope in the book 1984. Like I said before, every person views it differently. The story is overall gloomy. I had high hopes that the ending would turn out positive, but just like the rest of the story it had a negative effect. Hope is positive by giving people a feeling of self-confidence. It makes me want to go out and do something. It keeps human beings on their feet, which pushes me to always move and never give up. I see hope in every person. Anyone is capable of being anything you want. You have to put your mind to it and focus. If you set goals and dreams for yourself, then push yourself to fulfill them and succeed. You should never think less of yourself.
Shawshank Redemption and 1984 are complete opposite when it comes to their viewings on hope. 1984, only gave a few vivid examples of hope, as to Shawshank Redemptions whole idea revolved around hope.Hope is seemed to be a bad thing in the book 1984. No person ever thinks positive. They only see the dark side of every situation. Winston only cared about being with Julia and never realized what he was doing to hurt others, for example, having an affair. He is a self-centered person. Although hope is overall bad in 1984, there are a few examples of good hope. George wrote, “If you loved someone, you loved him, and when you had nothing else to give, you still gave him love.” This was the second example of hope that stuck out to me in the book 1984. He means that if all else fails there is still hope that you will give love, even if that’s all you have to give. I see hope as a good thing. It gives you strength to see a brighter future.
Hope makes me not want to give up. You should see hope in every person and motivate them to be better no matter what. The world would be a much happier place if every person believed in hope. Whether it is from a man having an affair with his wife to a precious party member, hope keeps the world moving along. When I think of hope, I see it as if the pain will eventually end. No matter how long or how hard it is, it will sooner or later go away. Michelle Obama once wrote, “You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.” Hope will always be a positive thing in my life. Everyone should follow your dreams. Do not give up and give yourself hope to succeed.
