The Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth is filled with so many violent twist, and turns. It is a hardcore story of murder that makes it hard to even like the protagonist. You must know, where there is so much murder, then not far behind is a trail gory blood. In the play Macbeth blood a form of symbolism, it has plenty of meaning. In this paper, I will identify the symbolism of blood throughout the story of Macbeth.
The first time the audience see the symbol of blood as a representation of pride in Macbeth is when the soldiers’ Captain is telling them in Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 35-40, that: “Yes, as sparrows eagles, or the hare the lion.
If I say sooth, I must report they were As cannons overcharged with double cracks, So they doubly redoubled strokes upon the foe. Except they meant to bathe in reeking wounds Or memorize another Golgotha” which means that he is proud of the extreme bloodshed that his soldiers, particularly Macbeth and Banquo bring on the battlefield.
The next time the symbol of blood is seen by the audience, it is a representation of being tough and feeling no remorse for killing someone.
In Act 1, scene 5, Lines 39-43, Lady Macbeth says: “Lady Macbeth unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up th’ access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between” This means if Macbeth is not strong enough mentally to kill the king, Lady Macbeth Will need the strength to do so.
A different meaning to blood occurs again in Act 2, scene 2, Lines 56-61. Macbeth is washing blood from his hands, and he says: “ Whence is that knocking? How is ’t with me when every noise appalls me? What hands are here? Ha, they pluck out mine eyes.
Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather The multitudinous seas incarnadine, Making the green one red.” Here, Macbeth is realizing no matter how hard he washes his hands he will not be able to remove the bad that he has done, his conscience will haunt him forever. There is a twisted darkness that surrounds this gloomy Shakespeare tragedy, It as true masterpiece of madness. The madness is driven by passion, love, greed, and BLOOD!
