I believe that people are made of their experiences. Good or bad, they shape who we are and who we will become. One of the most significant experiences of my life so far has been my high school years, and I’ve become a wiser, better person because of it. Beyond the standard classroom curriculum, my successes and failures throughout my academic and personal ambitions have taught me some important lessons, and I look forward to applying these lessons as I continue my education and growth.
High school academia has taught me to value my education, and to harness my passions and turn them into productivity.
I’ve discovered that the secret to academic success is all about perspective and attitude. Throughout high school, I’ve maintained a high GPA, lettered in academics each year, and consistently done well in Honors and AP courses. The main reason I’ve been able to do this is that I face education with the attitude that doing well will only bring me good things in life.
Though I certainly have struggled in the past with time management, I’ve learned that taking things one step at a time and focusing on the task at hand yields wonderful results. Setting realistic goals and giving them my all has made me a successful student.
I’m lucky enough to have an excellent and inspiring music program at my school, and my favorite way to participate in it is the marching band. Marching band requires discipline, commitment, teamwork, and the willingness to take criticism and grow from it.
After two years in marching band as your average clarinet player, I earned a student mentorship position during my junior year. Being a mentor taught me what it feels like to have people looking to you for guidance, and I learned that I enjoy helping people and being a leader. During my senior year, I earned the position of clarinet section leader, which I currently hold and greatly enjoy. Every day, I learn how to improve my own skills, as well as teach the underclassmen everything I know. Marching band is one of the most fulfilling things I do, but it still has some off days. Morale gets low, working together gets tough, and the pressure to be a leader gets overwhelming. But through all the hardships, I’ve realized that off days are essential for growth. There is no learning without any struggle, and learning is worth the struggle.
High school has taught me that I can find or make a home anywhere, and University of Wisconsin Stevens Point feels like it could be a home to me. As I pursue my college education, I promise myself that I will keep all the lessons I’ve learned during my high school years close to my heart. I’m proud of my academic and personal achievements, and I’m also proud of my struggles and how I’ve grown from them. The truth is that I’m overwhelmed by the thought of all the possibilities in my future. However, if life has taught me anything, it’s that risks are worth taking, and I’m strong enough to face whatever my future holds. I’ve struggled and I’ve triumphed, and I can’t wait to keep struggling and triumphing for the rest of my life.
