The Reason Why Do You Want to Be a Lawyer

For years, when I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian. But then my mom kind of turned me off the idea, by telling how hard it is to get into vet school. As I got older, I started watching different television shows, this included Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. After watching those shows I decided I wanted to be a police officer, then I got into dog training and want to be a police canine.

After hearing what it takes physically and mentally, I decided that that career path was not for me. But I still wanted to help people get justice, at this time my parents said I would be a great lawyer because I love to argue and almost win every argument. So I gave it some thought and I start watching legal drama T.V. shows like Suits. Now I know that it is not exactly like that in real life, but I liked what I saw, so I decided I wanted to go to Law School and become a prosecuting lawyer.

I don’t think I would ever be able to defend someone, so I want to be a prosecutor. I got a couple years left before then, but I am excited and ready. I want to help people get justice.

“Observational learning is a component of Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1977), which posits that individuals can learn novel responses via observation of key others’ behaviors.” Observational learning does not necessarily need to be strengthened, but rather depends on the presence of others, known as social models.

In the above example, even though they are the same age as the observer, the children who already know how to play the game could be viewed as authorities— and are thus social models. By studying the actions of social models, a person may learn how to act in a given situation. Another example of observational learning is when a person in law school sits in and observes a trial or a deposition. I chose this type of learning because I think it is going to be a very helpful tool while going to law school. “Modern research also indicates that reinforcers do more than merely strengthen or “stamp in” the behaviors they are a consequence of, as was Thorndike’s original view. Instead, animals learn about the specific consequences of each behavior, and will perform a behavior depending on how much they currently want—or “value”—its consequence. This idea is best illustrated by a phenomenon called the reinforcer devaluation effect (see Colwill & Rescorla, 1986).” An example of this is when a dog is first trained to perform two instrumental acts (e.g., picking one rope to pull over the other), each combined with a separate reinforcer (e.g., a sweet sucrose solution and meat). The dog continues to push both levers at the end of this practice, switching between the saccharose solution and the meat. I chose this section because will going to law school and being a lawyer I am going to need to have positive reinforcements to keep me going because I know that it is going to be hard and frustrating at times.

“What makes us commit to a goal? Researchers tend to agree that commitment stems from the sense that a goal is both valuable and attainable, and that we adopt goals that are highly likely to bring positive outcomes (i.e., one’s commitment = the value of the goal × the expectancy it will be achieved) (Fishbein & Ajzen, 1974; Liberman & Förster, 2008).” Commiting to a goal can be difficult. I chose this section because I know that when it comes to Law School and becoming a lawyer, I know I will need a goal and will need to have motivation to not want to change my goal, because I know I will want to. “The protection of a valued goal involves several cognitive and behavioral strategies ultimately aimed at “counteracting” the pull of temptations and pushing oneself toward goal-related alternatives (Fishbach & Trope, 2007). One such cognitive process involves decreasing the value of temptations and increasing the value of goal-consistent objects or actions.” For example, a sugar treat may be less attractive to health-conscious individuals than a piece of fruit to guide their preference towards the latter. I chose this section because I know there will be temptation to quit while in Law School and also while being a lawyer, but im going to push through it and get through law school and become a great lawyer.

In conclusion, I want to be a lawyer. While going to law school there is going to be a lot of temptation to want to quit. But I am not going to. I have goals in mind and will probably want to change them, but I will not change them. I think I am going to need to have some really good positive reinforcements, because it is going to be tough. But I also think that observational learning is going to be a great tool for me. I think while going to law school and becoming a lawyer is going to be difficult, I also think I am going to have a lot of fun doing it because I love helping people.
