James is a sixteen year old boy, who after hours upon hours of hard work managed to make the varsity basketball team in his high school, only to play for about fifteen minutes during his first season. Cases like his occur across the nation. People who make a team deserve a chance to play simply because they have earned a spot on that team. If coaches let all of the players on the team play, instead of a select few, each of the team members becomes more experienced, resulting in a better team overall.
Finally, Some players can have untapped potential that is just waiting to be shown to the rest of the people and this could result in them not getting the praise that they deserve. High school coaches should let the entire team play rather than letting a select few players do so.
The players on a team have worked extremely hard in order to be where they are.
If they have the ability to make the school team, then they must have the ability to play and do well. As a simple act of courtesy to the players, coaches should allow their hard work to not have simply been in vain. If a player is not as good as the rest, the coach should take it upon himself or herself to help that player become on par with the rest of the team. With perseverance, goals, some failure, practice, and most importantly a mentor, anyone can be a skilled athlete, student, or even a musician.
Julie Andrews once said, “Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” Anyone who can do do something will do that very thing, just with some help. One who has proper motivation is easily capable of success.
A number of people will say that the only thing that matters in competitive sports is winning. In order to win, one must have a well balanced team. This cannot be accomplished if three fourths of the team has never gotten a chance to play. Experience can make people better players and can even reveal one’s true talents. In order to have a team that works efficiently, all of the players should be competent and experienced. A major, common scenario in which this frequently occurs is when a star player on a team is injured and a sub par player is called in to replace him or her, leading to an extremely poor performance. Situations like this can be prevented by simply giving the whole team a good amount of experience. It is usually better to have a team of all good players rather than simply a few great players and a large number of mediocre or bad players. Even Michael Jordan admits that, “[He has] missed more than 9000 shots in my career. [He has] lost almost 300 games. 26 times, [He has] been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. [He has] failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why [he succeeds].” The best often start from nothing and make their way up in the world.
It is commonly known that there are many bad players everywhere. Among those considered to be so, many have the capability to me the next Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, but they never get a chance to harness their potential. Numerous athletes perform better while under pressure and are able to do more in a game than they could during practices. The pressure tends to motivate these people rather than discourage them. As Confucius said, “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” Any well motivated player must have a chance to succeed. A coach’s main task is to ensure that players reach their full potential. In order to do so, they should give the players opportunities to display and improve on their abilities.
Though it may it seem overwhelming to most coaches, it should be taken as a challenge to successfully train a full team of solid players. Students who make a team deserve to play in the spot that they have earned. An all around team is more capable than one with only a few good players. A great many people do not get to have their full potential realized by the rest of the world. Winning is a major part of sports, but is it really a win for James, who got a nice two hour long break while his teammates ran around scoring three pointers?
