What is justice? This may seem like a simple question to answer but for many in today’s society it is not. Justice is a complex part of everyday humanity that does not have one true definition but ever-changing meanings to different people Individuals throughout society have their own distinctive views about the topic of justice. Although “ justice “ has a vast list of meanings, it can somewhat be defined as “the principle of fairness and the idea of moral equity.” Justice is at the center if every debate, involving our criminal justice system, because of its extensive majority of definitions.

Such a society is dedicated to the notion that all of its members should benefit, and not one person or group should have a greater benefit or better rights than another.

Justice is a sense of security to some people, but in some cases justice is missed and can be used to strike fear. Although the definitions are broad and complicated, what justice means to me is being punished for a crime that was committed.

Seeing that the offender pays for what they have done. This so called punishment usually entails some type of prison sentence or maybe even the death penalty. For many people justice has the same meaning. But is it justice if a person kills another human being because that person previously hurt his or her child, or what about someone else who killed someone accidently or in self-defense? Is justice taking “an eye for an eye?” How exactly should the punishment fit the crime? These are questions that make society question which form of justice to agree with.

Although I believe that punishment should fit the crime, I do not agree with it to the extent of “an eye for an eye.” This scenario is not justice to me because two wrongs don't make a right. I believe a person should be punished to the fullest extent for a crime no matter who they are, their skin color, or their creed, but there are certain ways to go about accomplishing this. Imagine the daily life of a convict in prison. Everyday, eating meals the quality of airline food. Think about the disgusting rapist sleeping in the bunk above you. Imagine watching other inmates as they are beaten and harassed as you huddle in the corner of your cell to avoid them. Now imagine this life for a teenager. It is hardly appropriate for someone so young to be exposed to a lifestyle like that, juveniles should not be tried in courts as those of adult age are or placed in Adult Prisons.

Our society recognizes teenagers as adults once they turn eighteen. Until then, adult privileges such as smoking, drinking, and voting are restricted. If tenagers are excluded from the privilages of adulthood, why would they be punished in the same matter as adults? A fourteen year old boy who was mixed up in a gang shootout is placed in the same cell as a thirty-year-old man with fifteen accounts of rape on his record. Is it fair? Does it seem like the right way to be punished? If someone does not have the same rights and same laws they should never be treated in comparison to each other. People often don't understand the biggest threat to Justice is Injustice. Walter Landor once said,”The delay of justice is injustice.” it goes along with the saying, “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

This means that if legal amend is available for a party that has suffered some injury, but is not happening in a timely fashion, it is effectively the same as having no resolving at all. Justice is not a one way street it should be equal and taken the same way for every human being. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote A Letter From Birmingham City Jail and in his excerpt he stated, “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving at jetlike speed toward the goal of political independence, and we still creep at horse and buggy pace toward the gaining of a cup of coffee at a lunch counter.” Although Justice differs in every culture it is still the principle of moral rightness with equal treatment of every individual. No matter how much we desire to fix the causes of others suffering, the unfairness is out of our control.

Recognizing the world is mostly ruled by people that use their control, fear, money, and manipulation which is all about greed and power so the consequence is that injustice is going to outway any efforts you try to make. To help the concept of justice, focus on attempting to fix or minimise injustice in what is close to home, friends, family, your interests, your life and goals while being a little less selfish with yourself. The quote “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” shows us that we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.

The movie “Remember The Titans” is a great example of Morality and Justice. Coach Boone, a black coach, arrived to a high school in Virginia. The primarily white high school welcomed him as much as one would expect. Being a community in the south he knew that he would be tackled with misunderstanding, rejection, and hardship. Yet, he faced the community and school with unbelievable strength and by the end of the movie he proved with mortality and justice in mind, many things could be conquered and changed. Not only did the movie show strength but also displayed the team when they realized that in a moral and justice sense, they should be unified as one.

Life is never fair but when you encounter situations where equal treatment is not given, you continue and you push for what you believe is right rather than ignoring the problem and letting it go unrecognized.In conclusion, provision of justice in society occurs through he creation of situations where people have no ear, they have necessities, and they get to enjoy various constitutional rights while the law through the justice system shields them from different threats. Justice is doing for others what we would want done for ourselves. We need justice to enforce fairness and righteous behavior, and to provide a system for punishing those who violate it.
