Rules like a lot of things in life are essential. Rules give structure to many things like schools, government, and the military. In this essay, I will be discussing why rules are important and how I should have followed them as a sailor in the United States Navy. Rules serve a very useful and essential purpose. Thye acts as guidelines so that we as a society know what to expect from each other. As always when rules are broken there are consequences.
In the case of being in the United States military. Being a defiant seaman could ultimately cost the lives of my fellow sailors. Many sailors have read and understood the rules of the military also known as the Uniform Code Of Military Justice. The UCMJ defines the U.S military justice system and lists criminal offenses under U.S military law. I myself have broken some articles under the UCMJ.
I have broken article 92 in the UCMJ called “Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation” which clearly states “Any person subject to this chapter who violates any lawful general order or regulation having knowledge of any other lawful order issued by members of the armed forces and fails to obey the order shall be punished as a court-martial may direct”.
I made a mistake while in a leadership role and was naive enough to listen to my subordinates which ultimately lead to my leadership position being revoked by my higher ranking officer. I received a Captain's Mast or also known as a Non-judicial Punishment.
I should have been much more cautious with my choices, especially in a leadership role. I should have asked questions. I broke curfew and did not sign out of Liberty Log. As I mentioned before rules are set in place to keep things in order. In this case, I broke a rule that was put in place for safety reasons. No one knew of my whereabouts or if I was safe and all this could have been avoided if I asked questions or if I didn't follow subordinates. I did not listen or sign out and failed to follow basic procedures that everyone in uniform follows.
Military discipline and effectiveness are built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day one of Bootcamp. This is why we work so well by following orders from the more experienced leaders who have been doing this for years. I am here to pursue a career in the military and I know rules and regulations are what is going to make me move up the ranks and make me an all-around better seaman. I know I need to work on discipline and I'm doing corrective training.
