In today’s leadership, we can view it as an individual and collective responsibility to change the world for the better. Today, there is always a need to understand the responsibility of a leader due to the continued complexities, changes in technology, as well as unforeseen events that might take place in the near future. The 21st-century leadership is simply meant for responding to the various challenges taking place, as well as the opportunities that are taking place. The 21st century considers leadership as a property of any social work, unlike the 20th century, which indeed defined leadership in different elements that the leaders should be comprised with, or traits (O'Connell, 2014).
For example, a leader was considered to have a vision, have the capability to motivate others, as well as serve others.
There are also various differences that exist. During the 20th century, leaders were considered to have a vision, been charismatic. Indeed, they were considered to drive a business in a direction that they needed.
Today, leaders are able to collaborate with others; they are open, share, and may consult what they don’t understand. They understand that sharing of knowledge can solve challenges that might exist. The 20th century is characterized by leaders at a high level while managers did everything else. Today, leadership requires them to have full responsibility irrespective of their position (O'Connell, 2014). They should work together for the service of the people.
Just like the differences in leadership, there are also some differences in the management role of the 20th century to that of the 21st century.
Indeed, the 20th-century managers used to set the short-term objectives of the organization. These objectives were based on how the organization will make money through the customers. Basically, the 20th century was not about how the customer is important to the organization, but they used to provide goods and services to the customers in order to make money. The 21st century is a bit different (Lee, 2016). The 21st century is based on an infinite goal of delighting the customers to make profits. In this case, we can articulate that the firm makes money through the delightful experience it gives to the customers. When customers feel appreciated, they are able to come back again for the service. In addition, with the changes in technology, 21st-century managers need to have knowledge that technology is always changing. They need to understand that without technical knowledge, unfortunately, they will not have a variety of employment options.
In conclusion, the 21-century definition of leadership and the 21st-century role of the manager has combined to ensure that an organization is efficient and effective. When the leaders have understood the knowledge in technology, and the responsibility they should have, it has improved performance in organizations. Taking, for example, they are not considering who should have the duty to perform what is needed. They are self-driven, and they are able to help one another when they are faced with challenges within their positions (Male & Palaiologou, 2015). Also, in hiring, only those with knowledge of the tasks have to get the position. Through that, the efficiency of work has been improved. The changes in leadership, as well as the changes in management roles in the 21st century, have positively impacted organizations. Through that, they have been able to make long-term goals to meet.
