Verizon is a top tier telecommunication company with several decades of professional experience under its belt. The firm has operated under the name Verizon within the United States for nearly two decades and expanded into the global market shortly after its open. This report gathered information on the company, focusing on their foundation and history, their competitors within the industry and finally, the various advertising campaigns they have used to grow the company into Americas most reliable network. Learning about how and why Verizon has stayed a market learned provides encouragement to people seeking jobs in the sales and tech industry or someone looking for a safe and secure environment to work in.
Verizon Wireless Is an American telecommunication company, a model for how a business should be ran.
Verizon opened its doors on June 30th of 2000 out of its headquarters in New York City (History, 2016). Since its opening day Verizon has continued to surpass its competition and become the conglomerate that it is today.
The company is far from its end as a global tech leader and is consistently bringing its consumers the latest’s and greatest the tech industry has to offer.
Verizon’s mission statement in summation is to deliver the digital world to society by allowing it the ability to do more good for the community. This statement captures how Verizon has strived to deliver the best possibilities that the tech world has to offer ever since its conception 18 years ago. Verizon was founded out of the merger of two large and respected telecommunication companies, GTE and Bell Atlantic; one of seven baby bells that formed after the break up of AT&T monopoly in the telecommunication industry (Breman, 2018).
The purpose of this merger was to combine resources in an effort to create one single corporation that could compete against another other top tier firm in the industry. Verizon’s plan was to start a national top tier company that could later extend its endless possibilities into foreign markets.
Growth. Verizon has come a long way since it was first introduced in early 2000; it has now become the nations largest and most reliable service provider. Starting several years ago Verizon became the first provider to begin reducing the number of cell towers, paving the way for a cable less future. This has not affected its connectivity as the majority of its 100 million plus daily users have 4G LTE coverage, the fastest connection currently available. Verizon does not seek to limit its exposure as it plans to last for many more years to come. In an effort to maintain its dominance it recently purchased AOL and Yahoo both declining news platforms. Verizon plans to revive them and compete against large corporations like Google and Facebook changing the way we share information (Goel, 2017).
If one assumed Verizon’s only competitors were other service providers they would be surprised to find that couldn’t be further from the truth. Verizon’s main purpose as a company is to provide data coverage to its consumers and in that respect their main competitors are in fact other service providers. These providers include (a) AT&T, (b) Sprint, (c) T-Mobile, (d) Cricket Wireless and many other emerging companies all-battling to steal customers with promises of better coverage and pricing. Verizon is consistently awarded by JD Powers as the best service provider in the United States (JD Power award, 2018).
However as previously stated Verizon is expanding into a new direction, competing in the cutthroat news industry going up against established giants such as Google and Facebook. AOL and Yahoo were both at one point credible and well trafficked websites where viewers could read up on local and global news. However, as the years went on their platforms stayed stagnant and other websites materialized taking with them many readers. Verizon purchased these two websites and joined them under the new name OATH (Goel, 2017). By completing this acquisition Verizon hoped to retain both of the websites loyal readers and gain many more as it increases its reputation as a reputable news outlet. OATH and other Yahoo inspired apps will start to come pre-installed on customer’s phones to increase the exposure and reliability of its new product. OATH will have to stay up to date and engaging to its audience to compete against Google and Facebook, but with what’s been going with Facebook as of late, Verizon couldn’t pick a better time to launch its product and take its place.
“Can you hear me now” was once the pinnacle of Verizon’s advertising campaign. This slogan was featured on billboards and in TV commercials all across the country. Surprisingly Verizon has opted to leave it behind and focus on newer more relevant strategies. Is it because they lost their spokesperson to their rival, Sprint or it is because disruptions in phone calls and dead zones are becoming a thing of the past riding the need to ask the other person on the line if they can hear you. With the possibilities of wireless connectivity continuing to grow Verizon was left with the million-dollar question of what comes next, how could we keep progressing as a company and as a society.
Verizon’s Future. In the summer of 2017 Verizon launched its newest ad campaign dubbed “Humanability”. Currently 4G LTE is what the nation runs on but soon we will have 5G, the fastest data network technology has to offer making data lag obsolete. This opens new horizons for the company to explore; a push from smartphones to transitioning into smart cities is an immanent reality that Verizon is already avidly pursuing. Verizon’s newest campaign suggests the idea of implementing sensors in object all around us, which can help track aspects of our daily lives we didn’t even think necessary. For example by placing sensors in asphalt and street lamps Verizon can help monitor pollution levels, once a problem has been identified experts can begin working on how to solve it (Slefo & Slefo, 2018).
Another example is within the food industry, with trade markets becoming more and more interconnected and produce shipped all over the world it is important to keep them monitored. Thousands of people die each year from food related diseases some if not most could be prevented with as simple sensor no larger than a quarter. These sensors can monitor all aspects of the shipping route to insure produce is maintained at regulated temperatures and ideal conditions. Verizon is streamlining the world around us in ways most didn’t even think possible. Verizon’s newest Humanability campaign would like for its viewers to understand that they are more than just a service provider. Verizon is a company that can be counted on to run aspects in all industries, making them a necessity in daily life rather than just another distant fortune 500 company.
Verizon is gearing itself for the next push in the tech industry, preparing for any obstacle that may stand in its way. Currently with 177,000 employees world wide Verizon would be a great and exciting employment opportunity (“Verizon’s Communications History”, 2016). Because they are already focused on the future and headed in new directions its is safe to assume the company will only continue to grow and with it bring many more jobs possibly in industries currently not hiring or that do not exist.
Verizon is highly praised by its employees as an excellent and safe environment to work in, for someone majoring with a business degree more specifically a marketing degree Verizon would be a great place to seek employment upon graduation. With endless possibilities to grow as they expand in new directions with their news outlets and smart cities this company will be in need of hard working people who will carry the values and professionalism the world associates with Verizon.
